No memo vs old tires: LTO hits false information on social media
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) warned the public against the proliferation of what it described as false information amid the ongoing crackdown against motor vehicles violating road safety regulations.
LTO chief, Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao took note of the three false information circulating on social media, particularly the alleged memorandum to apprehend motor vehicles with tires more than five years old.
The supposed memo allegedly directs the police’s Highway Patrol Group (HPG) to issue violation tickets to vehicles with tires older than five years as they are already classified as “not roadworthy”.
“This claim is not true. No such directive, policy or memo has been issued by LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Markus V. Lacanilao,” the LTO said in a statement.
Another disinformation drive, according to the LTO, is the supposed random check on imported, project, and exotic cars to inspect all importation and tax documents while the last is the alleged “cross-checking of engine numbers” and penalizing “illegal modifications” such as loud exhausts;
According to the false information circulating on social media, vehicle registrations will allegedly be affected by these supposed new rules.
The LTO, however, advised the public that all that information circulating on social media platforms are not true.
“The agency reminds the public to verify information only from official LTO channels and avoid sharing unverified posts that may cause confusion or undue panic,” the statement read.
