TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan – The government has provided assistance to Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) affected by the massive fire in Tai Po District, Hong Kong recently.
Department of Migrant Workers (DMW)-Region 2 Director Rogelio Benitez said that the government immediately mobilized and deployed teams from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, the Department of Migrant Workers’ office in Hong Kong, and the Philippine Consulate in Hong Kong to visit shelters and deliver initial assistance to affected OFWs.
The DMW has provided P100,000 assistance to the child of Maryan Pascual Esteban of Jones, Isabela, an OFW who died in the fire.
The government committed to support the child’s education and facilitate the immediate repatriation of Esteban’s remains.
However, the government is still awaiting the decision of the Hong Kong government as the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The government assured the public that it will continue to monitor the situation, conduct follow-ups for additional assistance, and coordinate with authorities in Hong Kong to ensure the protection and safety of OFWs.
