BFP on full alert for Christmas, New Year revelries

The Bureau of Fire Protection iwill be on highest alert status starting Dec. 23 as part of public safety measures.
In a statement, it said around 31,000 roving and prepositioned firefighters will be out on the streets nationwide to enforce “Oplan Paalala-Iwas Paputok’’ campaign this Holiday season in a bid to reduce fire hazards and enhance its emergency response efforts.
BFP's full alert status will be until Jan. 1. 
As a precautionary measure, the BFP noted that its teams will be conducting inspections in places of assembly, pre-fire planning, community information drive campaigns and emergency medical services.
“The public is advised to be vigilant of the following top causes of fire: electrical-short circuits, overloading and open flame (ex. burning of wastes, open-flame cooking),’’ the BFP stated.
It noted that kitchen fires also have the tendency to occur more often during this season with fires caused by fireworks and pyrotechnics were on a sharp rise this year, from 31 incidents in 2024 to a running total of 111 as of December 3 this year.
The BFP also recommended the use of LED Christmas lights bearing the Philippine Standard (PS) Quality and/or Safety Mark and Import Commodity Clearance (ICC). 
With regard to the sale of firecrackers and pyrotechnics, the BFP is in close coordination with the local government units (LGUs) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) in the strict implementation of Executive Order 28, regulating the use of legal firecrackers in designated Community Fireworks Display Areas only.
The BFP assured that fire trucks and its personnel will be prepositioned near the selling areas of firecrackers and pyrotechnics despite strongly encouraging the public “to avoid using firecrackers.’’
“Our mission is clear: protect every community through proactive prevention, rapid response, and effective coordination,” BFP chief  Director Jesus P. Fernandez asserted.
“Oplan Paalala-Iwas Paputok ensures that all our units are fully prepared so that Filipino families can celebrate the season safely and without fear,” he added.
