A 15-year-old girl died after the motorcycle she was driving crashed into a tree as she was evading patrolling police officers in Barangay Corocor, Bacarra town, Ilocos Norte province on Thursday night.
Police Capt. Joseph Calderon, Bacarra chief of police, said lawmen spotted the victim and a teenage companion on a motorcycle without helmets and visibility vests.
Police signaled them to stop for questioning but sped away. Lawmen chased and found them on a curved portion of the road sprawled on the ground near an acacia tree.
The victim died on the spot and her passenger sustained injuries. The injured was taken to a hospital.
Investigation said the victim and her companion where on their way to get a project when they were noticed by the police.
Calderon said they pursued the two minors because they attempted to flee that raised the possibility that they might be hiding something.
He added that they understand the grief of the victim’s family but emphasized that they were simply performing their duties and did not want her to die.
Calderon reminded parents not to allow their children to drive any type of vehicle and not to let them go out at night to prevent such accidents.
