Makabayan bloc congressmen have assailed what they described as the "resignation strategy" that Malacañang has been resorting to amid allegations of massive corruption in government.
"We, the Makabayan bloc in Congress, condemn the Marcos administration's pattern of using resignations as a convenient escape hatch for corrupt officials who can implicate the President himself in kickbacks and anomalous deals," the militant solons said in a statement Friday, Dec. 5.
ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. Antonio Tinio, Gabriela Party-list Rep. Sarah Elago, and Kabataan Party-list Rep. Renee Co had this to say after learning about the resignation of Department of Justice (DOJ) Undersecretary Jojo Cadiz.
They said Cadiz's resignation was "particularly telling" since he wasn't an ordinary employee.
"He is a former Senate staff member of President Marcos Jr., a trusted associate now accused of being the bagman for kickbacks and maintaining ties with contractors doing business in the North. His proximity to power and his alleged role in corruption schemes point directly to Malacañang," the militant trio said.
"Ang pagbibitiw ay hindi solusyon—ito ay pagpapalusot lang.If anything (Resignation is not a solution—it is merely an evasive tactic, If anything)," they claimed.
"The pattern is clear: when officials become liabilities, they are made to resign before they can testify and expose the President's involvement. This is not accountability—this is a cover-up," they further said.
According to them, Cadiz's departure confirms "what we have long suspected: that corruption in this administration goes all the way to the top, implicating the President's inner circle and possibly the President himself".
"We reject this administration's strategy of damage control through resignation," they said.
Cadiz, together with other recently resigned officials such as former Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, former Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Secretary Amenah Pangandaman, and formee Department of Education (DepEd) Undersecretary Trygve Olaivar, must face full investigation, the Makabayan said.
"Their connections to contractors, their role in anomalous transactions, and most importantly, their links to President Marcos Jr. must be thoroughly examined," they reckoned.
They also called for the immediate investigation of all Cabinet members implicated in the flood control scandal. "Failure to do so means that Malacañang is engaged in cover-up and selective prosecution, not genuine transparency and accountability," they said.
"Hindi puwedeng maghugas-kamay si Marcos habang ang mga tauhan niya ay isa-isang umaalis dahil sa korapsyon (Marcos cannot simply wash his hands while his people are resigning one by one because of corruption)," the Makabayan underscored.
