PNP backs reward offer for Zaldy Co

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has expressed support to any proposal that will expedite the arrest of former lawmaker Zaldy Co, including placing a reward to bring him back to the country and face all the charges in relation to alleged massive corruption in flood control projects.
Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. said any reward may widen the scope of actionable information from various sectors and fast-track ongoing efforts to locate and arrest the former lawmaker.
“At this point, the Philippine National Police has not yet made a formal recommendation but we are ready to support whatever policy decision the national government may take. Our focus remains on locating and arresting Zaldy Co using all legal means available,” said Nartatez.
He was reacting to the statement from Malacañang that it is open to offer a reward for information leading to the arrest of Co, who is facing corruption and malversation charges tied to flood-control project irregularities.
Co is believed to be hiding in Portugal and Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla earlier urged Filipinos there to provide information to the Philippine authorities.
Last month, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced a P1-million reward for any information that could lead to the arrest of Cassandra Ong, who faces a qualified human trafficking charge related to the POGO hub Lucky South 99.
Nartatez stressed that once a policy direction is issued, the PNP is prepared to immediately implement established reward procedures.
Nartatez directed PNP units nationwide to tighten border and checkpoint monitoring, enhance coordination with other law enforcement agencies, and expand community engagement for grassroots-level information gathering.
The PNP is currently studying the implications of recommending a bounty while reinforcing its manhunt operations in coordination with the other law enforcement agencies.
“The PNP will relentlessly pursue fugitives, especially those with outstanding warrants and involvement in serious crimes. Our operations will continue until justice is served. They can run but they can never hide forever,” Nartatez said.
