President Marcos has renewed his call to the media to help in combating fake news, which he said has taken too much space and become damaging.
Speaking before journalists at the Year-end Fellowship with the media covering Malacañang on Wednesday, Dec. 3, Marcos stressed that the proliferation of fake news remains a big problem and "is something we have to be concerned about."
He expressed that in the beginning, it was entertaining but has now become damaging, citing "crazy conspiracy theories" that have no basis.
"Our big problem, and this one talaga (really) I need your help, I don't know how to approach it. We have many, many ideas. But what we need, really, to work together on is the fake news. The things that have been going on," Marcos said.
"But now, suddenly, your writings, your opinions are equal in importance and credibility to this crazy conspiracy theories that have no basis in fact. And that's why we really have to work on this very, very hard because it has taken too much of the space," Marcos stressed.
"Fake news has taken too much of the space. In the beginning, we thought it was funny, it was entertaining, but now it's become damaging. And that is something that we have to be concerned about. And that's why we say we need your help," he went on.
The President underscored that the government needs the help of all the media to try and explain to people that they have to be more discerning about what they read and what to believe in.
He recognized that the fight against fake news is not easy, but it has to be done so that people are not led into a "crazy mind game" that disconnects them from reality.
"And that is the challenge, I think, for us in the future. And it's not an easy one. It's not an easy challenge. But we have to continue and try and do it because it is important that people know the truth, that people know what is happening, truly. That the people are not led into this crazy mind game that people have been playing without any connection anymore to reality. That is what I think we all have to work together," Marcos told the media.
With the cooperation between the government and the media, Marcos hopes that the partnership they have established can be applied to the problem of fake news.
"I hope that that can be made do, that (partnership) can be applied to this problem that we face. Thereby, giving us a much better, much more logical kind of discussion. And that will only be to the good for our country and to the good of our people," Marcos said.
The Chief Executive encouraged journalists to make their partnership even stronger "because we now are facing the challenge that we have to work together to address."
"But thank you for all you have done. Thank you for all your efforts. And I know we work you all very hard, and I know it’s also worth it," he conveyed.
