Because good things come in threes, Samsung has announced the TriFold smartphone that opens up into a 10-inch device. It’s coming out much sooner than expected even, at least in Korea, which will be on December 12.
Samsung boasts the TriFold measures at 3.9mm thick, which I’m going to assume is when it’s fully unfolded. It’s powered by a Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile chip, customized for Samsung, and because taking pictures is still one of the most crucial aspects of a smartphone, comes with a 200MP camera.
Samsung also mentions that its 5600mAh battery is distributed in each of the three panels for energy efficiency.
The device sports what Samsung calls "Armor FlexHinge" technology. Two different-sized hinges working together to support the device. In other words, the hinges are going to be durable and reliable. The TriFold has been reinforced with a special coating to make the screens more durable. Also, one of the possibilities with this device is folding it the wrong way, which sounds very bad. However, Samsung has integrated an alarm system to scream at users that they’re doing it wrong.
At a fully unfolded display, Samsung praised their own engineering for the versatility the TriFold will be able to give to their users. This includes resizing apps in multi-window views, allowing side-by-side comparisons easier, reviewing documents… Samsung even suggested an architect can draft plans and blueprints and use different applications at the same time. But the bottom line is this: Owning a TriFold is like having a TV in your pocket. You can binge-watch the final season of Stranger Things on a much bigger screen whenever and wherever you are.
It may be a few more months before Samsung does a global launch or at least in regions where they believe the TriFold will sell. For now, it will be available in Korea on December 12 and no official prices have been mentioned yet. But if we were to guess, it would start somewhere with six digits.
