The mass resignation of the country's top officials beginning with President Marcos will just open the door for "opportunists".
Bishop Emeritus Antonio Tobias D.D., of the Diocese of Novaliches gave this warning in his homily Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 3, as he officiated a thanksgiving mass inside the House of Representatives.
Candidly talking politics in front of politicians, Tobias shared to the mass-goers that he agreed with the "general call for resignation" that was being raised by his fellow bishops.
But he recognized the great danger attached to such call.
"I am one with my brother bishops in their general call for the resignation of all officials—from the President to the Vice President down to the last senator and congressman," Tobias said.
"I am one that this is an ultimate measure that may still be democratic. But I join my brother bishops in cautioning it is that, it's a dangerous device for it may open the way to opportunists for government grab," he said.
"It’s dangerous talaga. Hindi ba? (Is it not?)" asked the Bishop Emeritus.
Tobias offered an advice amid the supposed political uncertainty in the nation. "To avoid this risk, let us be guided by the experts in our Constitution and in our laws. Listen also to them. Listen."
He gave special mention to House Deputy Minority Leader Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Party-list Rep. Leila de Lima as one such expert.
De Lima, in a statement after the mass, thanked Tobias for viewing her in such light.
"We thank Most Rev. Antonio Tobias, D.D., Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Novaliches, for his kind regard for me and for his strong advice to all government officials amid this massive corruption scandal in our country," said the ex-senator and Department of Justice (DOJ) secretary.
"We also thank him and all our other Church leaders for leading the call for transparency and accountability in our government," she said.
