The municipal government of Cainta, Rizal has started reaching out to the relatives of the Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) who died in the fire incident in Hongkong recently.
Mayor Johnielle Keith Nieto said the 10-year old son of Maryan Pascual Esteban has received his first P5,000 as a monthly financial assistance to the boy.
Nieto said the assistance is part of the welfare fund from the municipal government which will be given to Esteban's son every month until he reached his 18th birthday.
Nieto also revealed on his social media page that Esteban’s sister, who has been taking care of the boy in Cainta during the OFW’s absence, has been granted an employment with the municipal government effective Dec. 2.
Her work duration will last until her 10-year old nephew reaches adult age.
Aside from the assistance from the municipal government, the boy has also been granted a full college scholarship either for a degree or non-degree program at the ICCT Colleges Foundation Inc.
Mayor Nieto said the municipal government is thankful that ICCT Colleges, through its president, Dr. Vivien Co Say has granted the boy, a full scholarship.
Nieto revealed that prior to the granting of the scholarship, he had called up ICCT Colleges purposely to buy an educational plan for the boy, but after a few minutes, he learned that the school decided to grant the scholarship to the boy, without any cost on the part of the local government unit.
The mayor said he learned about the fate of the OFW a few days ago after he received a call from Department of Migrant Workers Sec. Hans Leo Cacdac, informing him that Esteban and her son resides in Cainta.
Esteban died in the fire along with her ward in the housing structure where they were residing at in Hongkong recently.
She was supposed to come home in the Philippines on Dec. 16 to spend Christmas with her son in Cainta and Isabela.
