In her first interview as Miss Universe 2025, Fatima addressed rumors that she was stepping down amid controversy.
"I will not step away from this crown because I really worked hard to be here. I am not here for fame, modelling, or searching for a husband. I am here because God put a purpose in my heart. I have a mission, and I will do it the whole year to serve others," she said, during an interview for "Nightline" on ABC News on Dec. 2.
The 25-year-old beauty queen also denied rumors that her father, an industrial engineer, influenced her victory in the Miss Universe pageant held in Thailand on Nov. 21.
"This is really crazy how the world works. They make this campaign of hate. My father has nothing to do with the organization. It is crazy that you are going to buy a crown. Not in Miss Universe for sure," Fatima also said.
Controversies, including walkouts by some candidates during the sashing ceremony and the resignation of two judges, have rocked this year's Miss Universe beauty pageant.
Fatima recalled walking out when she clashed with Nawat Itsaragrisil, Vice President of Miss Universe Asiana and President of Thailand as the Host Country.
The Mexican beauty queen believed that the clash would affect her chances of winning.
"But I couldn't stay quiet because in every case, your dignity is more important than any prize or a dream that you have," she said.
Fatima confirmed that some of the girls also followed her when she walked out.
"They stood up not for me. They stood up because they have values and respect. They knew that someone was doing something wrong to a woman," she said.
Nawat has apologized to the Miss Universe candidates and fans on national television.
"I am human. Everybody knows the past few days have been a lot of pressure. But it's already past. I think you must understand that the pressure is a lot. Sometimes, I cannot control. But I have not intended to harm anyone," said Nawat during the welcome show for the 2025 Miss Universe Competition that was broadcast live on YouTube on Nov. 5.
Nawat continued, "I respect all of you. However, I am truly sorry that it happened. I want to offer this opportunity to apologize to the delegates if anyone was not comfortable with what happened. I'm sorry."
"Also, I am sorry for the Miss Universe fans around the world. However, I would like to request that all the messages be accurate. I saw so many messages that I didn't say. Please review all content on our website for posting. Somebody really put bad words in the post," Nawat added.
The two judges who resigned were Lebanese musician Omar Harfouch and French athlete Claude Makelele.
In a series of Instagram Stories, Omar said he had a disrespectful conversation with Miss Universe owner Raul Rocha about the lack of transparency in the voting process.
On the other hand, Claude said he was resigning "due to unforeseen personal reasons."
