In a statement issued Tuesday, December 2, PCSO said the partnership was formalized during a ceremony led by PCSO General Manager Melquiades Robles and LRTA Administrator Hernando Cabrera, who emphasized the importance of strengthening emergency response for passengers who may suffer sudden cardiac arrest while using the rail system.
LRT-2 now equipped with AEDs in all stations and trains
PCSO donated a total of 30 portable AED units, which have been strategically installed at every LRT-2 station and inside trainsets. These devices can deliver an electric shock to restore normal heart rhythm during cardiac arrest—an intervention where seconds can mean the difference between life and death.
With the new equipment in place, passengers can easily seek immediate assistance from nurses, station personnel, and security staff who have been trained to respond to cardiac emergencies.
“PCSO is honored to support this life-saving initiative for our train commuters," Robles said. "By equipping every LRT-2 station and train with AEDs, we are creating a safer transit environment where timely responses can make a crucial difference,” he added.
A former LRTA administrator, Robles credited President Marcos for strengthening PCSO’s commitment to health-focused programs.
“Through these life-saving devices, we are bringing safety and welfare closer to our kababayans on the instructions of President Marcos," Robles said.
"This partnership shows how government agencies can work together to significantly improve public health and safety," he added.
Game-shanger for passenger safety
LRTA Administrator Cabrera also underscored the importance of the initiative, noting that thousands of commuters rely on LRT-2 daily.
“Every second counts, and these devices can save lives," Cabrera said.
"We are grateful for PCSO’s partnership in equipping LRT-2 with AEDs, which are crucial for quick responses to cardiac emergencies,” he added.
Cabrera noted that LRTA personnel continue to undergo training on CPR, AED operation, and basic first aid to ensure they can effectively assist during emergencies.
Part of long-term partnership for public health
The installation of AEDs is part of a broader Memorandum of Agreement signed in September 2024.
Under the agreement, PCSO will provide essential medical equipment to LRTA in exchange for advertising space inside stations and trainsets, including promotions for the National Day of Charity celebrated every October 30.
LRTA has committed to maintaining the devices through regular checks and continuous occupational first aid and basic life support training for frontline personnel.
A safer, more prepared LRT-2
With AEDs now available throughout the rail line, LRT-2 becomes a safer transport system equipped to address one of the leading causes of sudden death worldwide—cardiac arrest.
The initiative marks a significant milestone in commuter safety and strengthens the government’s broader push to enhance public health and emergency preparedness.
