'LA JOTE MANILEÑA' oil on canvas, 27x35 inches, 1886
Not many might know about the Thomasian artist Félix Martínez, but recently, one of his works just sold for a whopping price of ₱39.7 million.
Created way back in 1886, Félix’s “La Jota Manileña” found its way to a private collection in Europe, where it stayed until resurfacing at a Swedish auction sale room. It was being sold under the unassuming title of “Village Scene, Philippines.”
The artist, Félix, was born in 1859 to a family of wealthy artists in Santa Cruz, Manila. He graduated from the University of Santo Tomas in 1877. Later on, he would find himself learning art among Filipino elites of the time at the Escuela de Dibujo y Pintura, now known as the present-day College of Fine Arts of the University of the Philippines. He is mostly known for various landscape paintings and portraits, as well as being one of the painters of the San Sebastian Church’s interior. Notable alumni of the school include Juan Luna, Félix Resurrección Hidalgo, and Pelagia Mendoza y Gotianquin.
“La Jota Manileña” directly translates to “The Jota from Manila,” with “jota” being a traditional Spanish dance later incorporated into our own style. It would be performed during family gatherings and fiestas. From Félix’s work, we find a barrio-style setting with the two dancers prominently displayed in the center. To their side, a small audience watches intently as the guitarist brings life to their movements. One man can be seen carrying a chicken, prompting commenters on social media to joke about how he was likely preparing it for a sabong match. “La Jota Manileña” is a comforting reminder of the simple joys we have carried on through the years, finding joy in expressing ourselves through outlets such as dance.
Salcedo Auctions sold “La Jota Manileña” during its 15th anniversary “Under the Tree: The Wish List” auction on Saturday, Nov. 29.
