Palace: E-bikes, e-trikes ban on national roads to ensure safety, not hardship

Banning electric bikes and tricycles on national highways are not intended to cause hardship to the people, but to ensure safety for motorists, Malacañang said.
Palace Press Officer and Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said the impounding of electric vehicles caught plying on national highways, which was suspended on Monday, Dec. 1, is intended to keep e-bike and e-tricycle users safe.
She pointed out that instilling discipline is not a move against e-bike and e-tricycle riders.
"Hindi po pagpapahirap ang mga ganitong klase ng polisiya. Ito ay para sa kasiguruhan ng safety ng gumagamit ng e-bikes, safety sa mga kababayan natin at tandaan po natin motorized vehicle po ito at may batas din po tayo na dapat sinusunod (These kinds of policies are not meant to make life harder. They are for ensuring the safety of e-bike users, the safety of our fellow citizens, and we must remember that this is a motorized vehicle, and we have laws that need to be followed)," Castro said.
"Hindi po ibig sabihin na kahirapan ay dapat na nating suwayin kung ano iyong batas (Poverty does not mean we should disregard the law)," Castro added.
"Ang pagdisiplina po ay hindi para banggain ang issue ng kahirapan – hindi po issue ang kahirapan dito; issue ito ng pagtupad sa batas para po masiguro ang safety ng bawat Isa (Discipline is not meant to clash with the issue of poverty – poverty is not the issue here; the issue is compliance with the law to ensure the safety of everyone)," the Palace official further said.
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has suspended the impounding of electric bikes and electric tricycles caught operating on national highways on Dec. 1.
According to the LTO, the strict implementation of apprehension and impounding of e-bikes and e-tricycles violating the ban will start on Jan. 2 next year.
