More onshore wind projects are gaining momentum as renewable energy (RE) firm NexGen Energy Corp. reported that its three projects under its wind development arm have been awarded service contracts and certificates of registration (CORs).
In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) on Monday, Dec. 1, NexGen said its subsidiary, Airstream Renewables Corp. (ARC), has been awarded wind energy service contracts (WESCs) and CORs from the Department of Energy (DOE) for its two projects in Luzon and one in Visayas.
These developments represent around 1.7 gigawatts (GW) of capacity.
These include the 600-megawatt (MW) Pangasinan onshore wind project, which covers 13,770 hectares (ha) and will utilize an eight-kilometer (km), 230-kilovolt (kV) transmission line to connect to the 250-kV Labrador substation of National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP).
The 500-MW Nueva Ecija onshore wind project, which is also awarded a WESC and COR, will be situated on a 9,234-ha site and connected through a 15-km, 230-kV line to Sampaloc substation.
Samar onshore wind project, which boasts approximately 600 MW of projected capacity, will be located in a 16,929-ha area and connected through a 138-kV transmission line to Victoria substation.
These developments are valued at around $2.5 billion, or approximately ₱146.49 billion.
Eric Y. Roxas, NexGen president, said these DOE awards would allow the company to execute its projects, which could deliver strong returns in the future.
“Securing 1.7 GW of new WESCs represents a major step forward in NexGen Energy’s growth strategy and materially strengthens our development pipeline,” he said.
“We appreciate the DOE’s continued confidence in our capabilities, and we remain focused on disciplined execution, capital efficiency, and building high-quality renewable assets that will deliver strong returns for years to come.”
While these wind energy projects have yet to come to fruition, the DOE has recently amplified renewable energy (RE) investments in the country, as it has concluded two rounds of the Green Energy Auction Program (GEAP).
Onshore wind technologies are included in the fourth GEA, which awarded about 2,518 MW of capacity to developments located in Quezon province, Sorsogon, and several Visayas provinces.
Apart from land-based wind assets, NexGen earlier expressed interest in participating in the offshore wind (OSW) bidding.
The DOE is offering 3,300 MW for fixed-bottom OSW projects. Winners will be awarded a 20-year supply period, while those with a service contract will receive green energy tariff (GET) payments once their developments are commissioned and listed in the spot market.
