Mayor Vico urges public to live with integrity, break culture of corruption
As the public raises its voice against corruption, Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto urged the people to live with integrity and break the culture of corruption following his confirmation about the preventive suspension of two barangay captains over alleged corruption.

On Sunday, Nov. 30, Sotto confirmed the suspensions during the commemoration of the 162nd birth anniversary of Andres Bonifacio.
He cited a frequent question from residents: “Ano bang p’wede kong gawin bilang mamamayan (What can I do as a citizen?)” to end rampant corruption—a question that reflects the spirit of Bonifacio, who stood for the people and fought against injustice.
In his speech, Sotto said Barangay Rosario Captain Ely Dela Cruz has been preventively suspended for 60 days, as authorities continue the investigation into the falsification of public documents tied to further alleged corruption.
Meanwhile, Barangay Kalawaan Captain Jess Gaviola has also been preventively suspended for 60 days over a fake document related to the procurement of goods.
Sotto said citizens can make a difference by following the example of private individuals who have the courage to gather evidence, rather than just make accusations, and formally report any misconduct they observe in their barangays.
The mayor also called on denormalizing corruption and strengthening institutions for transparency, justice, and accountability, noting that while some officials were convicted in the past, nothing happened afterward.
“As we seek justice, let's also not forget our nation's history and struggle with corruption. There are no shortcuts. Have we forgotten that not too long ago we even had a former president convicted... but what happened after?” he said.
Sotto said that as city mayor and for the city government, they will focus on two things: helping at the national level by sharing the personal and institutional knowledge and evidence they have, and building on their gains and reforms within their jurisdiction, ensuring that these changes now trickle down to the barangay level.
“We all have our part to play. Keep fighting,” he said.
Meanwhile, in celebration of Bonifacio’s 162nd birth anniversary, the local government unveiled the historical marker of his monument.
"Ngayong araw ay inaalala natin ang kanyang tapang, paninindigan, at pagmamahal sa bayan. Ipinakita niya na ang tunay na lakas ay makikita sa taong handang tumayo para sa katotohanan at katarungan, kahit sa gitna ng panganib (Today, we remember his courage, conviction, and love for the country. He showed that true strength is found in those willing to stand for truth and justice, even in the face of danger)," Councilor Angelu De Leon said.
"At tulad ni Bonifacio, ang mga Pasigueño ay patuloy na nagpapakita ng tapang sa pagsusulong ng tama. Sa iba’t ibang larangan ng paglilingkod at pang-araw-araw na buhay, makikita ang mga mamamayan na handang makiisa, magsalita, at kumilos para sa makabuluhang pagbabago sa ating Lungsod (Like Bonifacio, Pasigueños continue to show courage in pursuing what is right. In various fields of service and daily life, citizens are ready to participate, speak up, and take action for meaningful change in our city)," she added.
