International Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca ruled the Open Under-16 blitz category to snare the country’s lone gold medal in the 27th Asian Youth Chess Championships in Thailand recently.
Arca succumbed to Indian IM Ethan Vaz in the ninth and final round to finish with 7.5 points on seven wins, one draw and one loss, but it was enough to claim the title.
Vietnamese FIDE Master Dinh Nho Kiet and Vaz, wound up with identical seven points for silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Dinh, however, almost snared the gold medal but fell short in his bid after bowing to lesser-ranked Amirreza Kerdegar of Iran in the final round.
It was Arca’s second medal after clinching the silver in the standard class a few days back.
He came close to another medal after he finished tied for first with four others in the rapid section.
However, he settled for fourth after tiebreaks were applied.
Marius Constante also shone for Team PH after winning the bronze medal in the Open U18 category.
