The Department of Education (DepEd) on Saturday, November 29, commended Team Philippines for delivering one of its strongest performances yet at the 14th ASEAN School Games (ASG), securing a 4th-place overall finish with a 43-medal haul—11 gold, 10 silver, and 22 bronze.
In a statement, DepEd welcomed the impressive result, noting it marked a major improvement from last year’s 6th-place standing.
The agency said the latest achievement of Filipino student-athletes at the ASG in Brunei reflects steady progress in the country’s school sports program.
The delegation received a warm heroes’ welcome upon landing in Manila on Friday night, greeted by families, officials, and supporters celebrating the milestone achievement.
DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara praised the athletes for elevating the country’s profile in regional youth sports, saying the performance reflects the administration’s strengthened commitment to school-based athletics under President Marcos.

“Maraming salamat sa tapang, husay, at dangal na inalay ninyo para sa Pilipinas (Thank you very much for the courage, excellence, and honor you have dedicated to the Philippines),” he added.
Record-breaking performances fuel medal surge
Athletics proved to be the Philippines’ strongest arena, powering the medal tally with record-setting victories.
Jhul Ian Cañalita of Bohol shattered the Boys’ 3,000-meter record with a blazing 8:47.52 finish.
Ma. Lhynette Libranda of NCR broke the Girls’ 100-meter hurdles record twice—clocking 14.20 seconds in the semifinals and 13.82 in the finals.
Anthony Cariaso of NCR swept gold medals in the Boys’ 800-meter and 1,500-meter events.
PH reclaims ASEAN basketball supremacy
The Philippines also regained dominance in basketball, with both the Boys’ and Girls’ teams finishing undefeated to reclaim their ASEAN School Games titles.
Wushu adds to podium count
Wushu athletes further boosted the medal tally with one silver and two bronze, rounding out the country’s strong multi-sport campaign.
Delegation leadership and participation
Supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), the national contingent was led by Chef de Mission Dr. Miguel Angelo Mantaring, Director IV of the DepEd–Bureau of Learner Support Services, with Deputy Chef de Mission Cesar Abalon, Chief of the BLSS–School Sports Division.
The Philippine team competed against nine ASEAN countries across eight sports: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Swimming, Netball, Pencak Silat, Sepak Takraw, and Wushu.
