The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said that 63 Filipinos were safe from the Tai Po, Hong Kong fire incident, while one was injured and one remains missing.
“The Consulate General of the Philippines in Hong Kong is presently continuing its on-the-ground operations to locate and assist Filipinos affected by the Tai Po fire incident,” a statement on Friday night, Nov. 28 said.
The Consulate General mobile teams confirmed that the 63 Filipinos are displaced by the fires with no injury and threat to life, one was injured and required medical assistance, and one is still missing and cannot be contacted.
There are also 28 names currently for verification, which meant they are likely to be residents of the area but are not reported missing and their whereabouts unknown.
“Yes, they were registered and listed as residing and working at Wang Fuk Court but there’s no report that they’re missing from the employer or NOK. We just need to make sure they’re really no longer in the site when the fire broke out,” DFA spokesperson Angelica Escalona said.
The DFA statement also noted that its Consulate General in Hong Kong is also presently verifying the status and whereabouts of 91 Filipinos registered at the Wang Fuk Court.
“Some of these workers may have changed employers, moved to a different area or even returned to the Philippines prior to the fire disaster,” it added.
The DFA calls on the public “who wishes to volunteer information on affected workers or offer help and support” to contact the agency on its hotline numbers: 9155 4023 (consular assistance), 5529 1880 (MWO), and 6345 9324 (Overseas Workers Welfare Administration).
The death toll due to the fires that set the Wang Fuk Court ablaze already killed 128, while hundreds are still missing.
Eight more were arrested as part of the ongoing investigations.
