Philippines may experience up to 2 more tropical cyclones before 2025 ends
Projected paths of December tropical cyclones in the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAGASA)
One to two more tropical cyclones may still enter or develop within the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) in December, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said, citing climatological records.
The next cyclones on the agency’s list are “Wilma” and “Yasmin.”
Climatological data suggest several possible tracks for December storms.
Some tropical cyclones may enter PAR without making landfall, recurving toward the eastern part of the country before moving on to Japan.
Others may enter PAR but recurve before reaching northern or northeastern areas, also heading toward Japan.
Landfalling cyclones may follow different paths depending on their track.
Northern or Central Luzon could be crossed by storms that exit toward Hong Kong, while southern Luzon to northern Visayas may see cyclones moving toward Vietnam.
Southern Visayas to northern Mindanao could also be affected by storms heading toward Thailand.
Weather outlook for Nov. 29 to Dec. 5
Meanwhile, PAGASA’s weekly weather outlook shows that three systems, as well as a low-pressure area (LPA), will influence conditions across the country in the coming days.
On Saturday, Nov. 29, cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms are expected over Northern Luzon, particularly Cagayan, Isabela, Apayao, Mountain Province, Quirino, and Nueva Vizcaya due to the shear line, a weather system formed by the collision of cold northeasterly winds (amihan) and warm easterly winds.
The northeast monsoon will also bring mostly cloudy skies with scattered to isolated rains over Ilocos Region, Benguet, Abra, and Batanes.
The rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated showers or thunderstorms caused by the easterlies.
From Monday to Wednesday, Dec. 1 to 3, amihan will continue to bring mostly cloudy skies with scattered to isolated rains over Batanes, Cagayan, Apayao, and Ilocos Norte.
The rest of the country will remain partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms from the easterlies.
By Thursday and Friday, Dec. 4 and 5, the trough of an LPA will trigger scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms over Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, Caraga, and Davao Oriental.
Amihan will lightly affect Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, and Cagayan Valley, while the rest of the country will continue to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers.
