That one big shout from the Mall of Asia Arena could mean more than just a cry to end corruption when the electric crowd from eight different UAAP schools stand in unison to signify matching intent in the Season 88 cheerdance competition on Saturday, Nov. 29.
For many, it is a statement that speaks heavily of the message, outweighing the rivalries these universities have all built up for the centerpiece event marked prominently in every collegiate calendar.
The UAAP is urging the community to show up in white to help push its slogan this year: "Passion for Victory, Passion for Integrity! No to Corruption!"
With thousands eager to watch these schools perform -- many of them keenly anticipating another explosive routine from National University, the reigning champion which seeks its record-breaking ninth overall crown -- students, alumni, team officials, and league executives also reserve an amount of energy to express their sentiments in a moment of protest under one roof.
After all, the NU Pep Squad, lined up at sixth on a day of twist and tumbles, aims to become the gods of cheerdance for a fitting farewell to most of its veteran members.
“This year talaga, since yung last year’s performance, napaka-challenging yung pinerform ng ating mga competitors, it helps us talaga since we’re motivated to create more,” said Bulldogs head coach Gab Bajacan.
“Kailangan din namin talunin kung ano yung mga nakita naming maganda sa kanila. ‘Yon yung pinaghandaan namin this year and to create new stuff for the competition and for the sport itself,” he added. "We're happy that we have new players coming in now, and this will prepare them when they are seniors already. Madami kaming ga-graduate kasi this year.”
If stars align, NU could break the three-way tie in the championship table with University of the Philippines and University of Santo Tomas .
The UP Varsity Pep Squad raises the curtain with its Christmas-themed routine that will bring an early holiday vibe to the spectators.
Meanwhile, the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe wrap up the competition with a Halloween-inspired performance.
Following UP are the University of the East, Adamson , Ateneo, De La Salle University, then Far Eastern University.
“The Cheerdance Competition is not only a showcase of skill and teamwork but also a platform to inspire values-driven action,” said Season 88 president Fr. Rodel Cansancio, OP of University of Santo Tomas.
“We hope that this initiative encourages everyone in our community to stand together for integrity and hope,” he added.
