DAVAO CITY – The family of former President Rodrigo Duterte accepted the International Criminal Court Appeals Chamber’s decision against his interim release on Friday, Nov. 28, saying they are facing the development “with peaceful hearts.”
In a brief statement, the Duterte family said they will continue coordinating with the defense team handling the case and will remain steadfast in offering support to the former President.
“The family accepts the ICC Appeals Chamber’s decision with peaceful hearts. We will continue to work with the defense team on the case and will keep supporting former President Duterte with our daily conversations," the Duterte family said.
“We thanked everyone who prayed with us today.”
The ruling allowed former President Duterte’s continued detention as proceedings move forward related to allegations in connection with his anti-drug campaign.
Speaking before the crowd at The Hague, Netherlands, Davao City second district Rep. Omar Duterte, the former President’s grandson, criticized the ruling, calling the continued detention of his grandfather “inhumane.”
Rep. Duterte also said he hopes the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. “feels vindicated” by the outcome of the appeal.
Pro-Duterte vlogger “Lucky Charm,” who is based in the Netherlands, said she was “sad, but not shocked” by the ICC’s rejection of the interim release request.
Though she respects the decision, Lucky Charm said she was disappointed over the continued detention of the 80-year-old former leader.
