Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla on Thursday, Nov. 27, dismissed circulating reports about the formation of a civilian–military junta, describing them as “baseless.”
In a statement, Remulla assured the public that the government is closely monitoring individuals attempting to recruit personalities for an “alternative government,” and emphasized the need for continued vigilance.
“Not happening,” he said when asked about calls by some individuals and groups for a civilian-military junta, noting that efforts to destabilize the government have surfaced repeatedly throughout the country’s history.
The DILG chief referred to a recent account from Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, who claimed he was approached to join such efforts but declined.
While stressing the need for caution, Remulla said the situation “does not warrant unnecessary alarm.”
“It is always a point of concern but it’s not a point of panic. It’s not something that would justify wasting significant time and resources. We will prioritize addressing the issues at the floodgates over these destabilization rumors,” Remulla said.
He added that security and intelligence units are tracking the situation, identifying those involved in exploratory discussions and recruitment as mainly retired or semi-active politicians.
“Mostly retired, some semi-active politicians. [Some are] connected with active politicians as well,” he said.
He explained that semi-active politicians are those who recently held office and continue to engage publicly in politics.
Asked what the recruiters are offering, Remulla said, “Everything, from positions to power to money. Lahat na inoffer nila (Everything is being offered).”
