University of Perpetual Help System Dalta banked on its second-half surge to repel Jose Rizal University, 81-74, and barge into the semifinals of the NCAA Season 101 men’s basketball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Thursday, Nov. 27.
Living up to their lofty billings, Mark Gojo Cruz and Patrick Sleat took the front seats and carried the Altas to a big 16-0 run which turned a 43-all deadlock into a 59-43 lead which was enough to create separation from the surging Bombers.
Perpetual’s win set up a semis clash against the victor in the quarterfinal rubber-match between Arellano and Letran which will battle it out this Friday, Nov. 28, at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.
The Las Piñas-based squad, which has a twice-to-beat bonus against JRU, also ended its drought as it advanced to its first semis appearance since Season 97.
San Beda and Lyceum are still playing as of writing, while College of St. Benilde and reigning champion Mapua plunge into a do-or-die action also Friday at the same San Juan venue.
“Tinatry ko lang talaga to make the right read every time. Gusto kasi ni coach Olsen (Racela) for us to take the high percentage shots,” Patrick Sleat said.
“Whatever we’re doing, it’s not enough. We have to add more to our games and put in the extra effort. We also have to grow, not just as individuals but as a team,” he added.
Gojo Cruz paced Perpetual 23 points, two rebounds and two assists while Sleat posted a double-double of 14 points, and 10 assists with six rebounds.
For the JRU side, Sean Salvador did his part with 18 points, while Allen Laurenaria impressed with a 16-point and 10-rebound output which all went to waste as the Heavy Bombers wrapped up their campaign.
Meanwhile, San Beda flexed its might and secured a convincing 91-67 win over Lyceum to book its ticket to the semis.
The Red Lions made sure not to squander their quarters bonus, delivering a clinic on both ends to thwart the Pirates’ upset bid and advance to the semis, where they await the winner between Mapua and Benilde.
Yukien Andrada and Agjanti Miller powered San Beda with 20 and 18 points, respectively, while Bismarck Lina added a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds.
John Barba tallied 13 points, two rebounds, and four assists in his final NCAA game, while Renz Villegas chipped in 11.
