The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed that there were 23 Filipino domestic workers affected by the Level 5 fire that engulfed a high-rise apartment complex in Hong Kong, while one remains missing.
In a statement on Thursday night, Nov. 27, the agency also said that there have been no confirmed Filipino casualties so far from the Tai Po Fire incident.
“The Consulate, together with the MWO-HK and OWWA-HK, conducted a joint visit of the shelters administered by the Hong Kong government to extend assistance to Filipino nationals affected by the fire,” the statement read.
It added that while the 23 Filipino domestic workers required welfare assistance, one overseas Filipino worker (OFW) is currently at the intensive care unit of a local hospital.
“The Consulate and MWO-HK will continue to coordinate with Hong Kong’s Police Force, Labour Department and Home Affairs Department to determine the whereabouts of one missing Filipino,” the DFA said.
“The Department is monitoring the situation in Tai Po closely. The Department also wishes to thank Hong Kong authorities who are helping locate, identify and assist affected Filipinos,” it assured.
The death toll in Hong Kong’s deadliest fire in decades rose to 65, with hundreds still missing.
The fire that threatened to engulf the apartment buildings in Tai Po, New Territories is “basically under control” now, authorities said.
However, rescuers continue to search for missing residents.
Three employees of a construction company responsible for the ongoing renovation of the buildings have already been arrested for manslaughter following initial reports that the company used highly flammable materials such as bamboo scaffolding and polystyrene boards.
