University of Santo Tomas asserted its dominance and completed its Season 88 sweep after notching a 101-84 win over Far Eastern University to secure the outright Finals berth in the UAAP women’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday, Nov. 26.
The Tigresses unloaded a strong start before fending off the Lady Tamaraws’ assault in the fourth quarter thanks to the timely hits of Karylle Sierba and Coi Danganan.
With its 14th win, the España-based squad has inched closer to its title redemption bid as it entered its third straight championship appearance, while FEU dropped to 6-8 to fall short of its semis aspirations.
National University sits at second and will face the winner between Adamson and Ateneo in the stepladder quarterfinals.
“I told them to always give their best, kahit saan kaming makarating,” said UST head coach Haydee Ong. “So we’re grateful na we’ve come back to Finals again, basta kami we’ll give our all to be prepared.”
Sierba collected 17 points, five rebounds, five assists, and three steals, while Danganan and Oma Onianwa added 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Eka Soriano and Kent Pastrana chipped in 13 points apiece while Brig Santos scored 10.
Amhyah Espanol and Shemaiah Abatayo played their hearts out after listing 25 and 21 points, while MJ Manguiat contributed 12 points in a losing cause.
Meanwhile, UST stamped its class and mauled FEU-Diliman, 108-70, to clinch the outright spot in the stepladder semis of the 16U division.
The Tigers Cubs turned a decent 48-35 halftime lead into a sizable 75-47 cushion that completely took the fight out of the Baby Tamaraws.
