The call to raise brighter, taller, and stronger Filipino children reverberated throughout The Manila Hotel’s Tent City last Sunday. Between song numbers, the audience passionately joined the chant: “B-T-S… Brighter… Taller… Stronger… B-T-S!” The aspiration to improve the physical and mental health of the next generation of Filipinos rang powerfully.
The occasion was the Greatest Love of All: Christmas Special, a benefit concert in support of the Children’s First One Thousand Days Coalition (CFDC). In partnership with The Manila Hotel, the CFDC staged the yuletide evening of high-caliber performances led by iconic OPM diva Kuh Ledesma, whose powerful voice — rich, resonant, and soulful as ever — captivated the multigenerational audience as she sang Dito Ba and her other timeless hits.
Sharing the stage were equally fascinating personalities whose spheres of influence extend far beyond the performing arts: former Press Secretary Atty. Mike Toledo and DOST Secretary Dr. Rene Solidum Jr. Guided by the musical direction of Timothy John Cruz and the overall direction of George Sison-Tagle and Paul Dizon, the concert also featured the talents of Isabella, Bobby Alvarez, Egay Rubiano, Egay Banaag, Jeffrey Panado, Rachel Verns, Pam Esquivel, and Rachelle Rule. I also performed a few songs, including The Prayer and You’ll Never Walk Alone.
What made the night extraordinary was its unshakeable sense of purpose. At its core, the event championed a mission far more profound: ensuring that Filipino children in need receive the nutrition, care, and support vital during the first 1,000 days of life, from conception to age two.
This is the heart of the CFDC’s Holistic Development Program, an advocacy that recognizes early childhood as a decisive window — one that shapes lifelong health, learning capacity, and productivity. The first 1,000 days are the foundation of a child’s future. When nutrition is compromised during this critical period, the consequences can be devastating, irreversible, and costly for society.
On behalf of the CFDC, where I serve as national project chairman, let me express my heartfelt thanks not only to all the performers but also to the sponsors led by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), SM Investments, Pioneer Insurance, and Advent Energy.
Secondary sponsors include the Knights of Columbus, YMCA, Lions Club, PHILEXPORT, Clark Development Corp., RCMC Foundation, and Metro Pacific Investments Corp. Other sponsors are Filipino Indian Commerce & Welfare Society Inc., Centro Escolar University (CEU), City Government of Meycauayan in Bulacan, Sen. Vicente Tito Sotto III, Dr. Enrique Y. Yap, Jr., The Herma Group, City Government of Santa Rosa, Laguna, Baby Pro Philippines, Lamoiyan Corporation (Hapee Toothpaste), Kitchencare Consultancy Phils., Inc., Professional Parking Management Corporation, Dermacare, Nague Malic Magnawa & Associates Customs Brokers, and Philtrust Bank.
Also included as sponsors are UERM Medical Center, Masterpact Techno Solution Inc., PAG-IBIG Fund, City Government of Marilao in Bulacan, Infinite Travel & Tours Corp., Montesa Medical Group, Wilcon Depot, Commission on Elections (COMELEC), Knights of Rizal, Everest Appliances, BJMP, City Government of Calamba in Laguna, BCBP, PCCI, Victory Liner, JAS Manpower, Mueblas Italiano, DGN Jun Pasion & Peaches Pasion, Filipino Inventors Society (FIS), and Rhoda Conejos.
The funds raised will strengthen our work with LGUs to fight malnutrition where it starts. Our CFDC operations manual lays down a clear, data-driven strategy: establishing joint NGO–Barangay First One Thousand Days Nutrition Committees; identifying pregnant and lactating mothers; offering trimester-specific nutrition plans; ensuring breastfeeding support; conducting growth monitoring and evaluation; coordinating with DOH-accredited health centers; and adopting nutritionally at-risk barangays.
The CFDC also trains different batches of trainers who, in turn, train those in non-government organizations (NGOs) on how to effectively combat malnutrition. The role of NGOs is in line with RA 11148, the “Kalusugan at Nutrisyon ng Magnanay Act,” which calls for a whole-of-government approach, with the participation of civil society organizations and the private sector, to scale up nutrition efforts.
Decades of research affirm that a child’s first 1,000 days of life form a critical time that spells the difference between an impoverished life of misery with many health problems, or a life of good health and success.
UNICEF Philippines warns that malnutrition in the first 1,000 days leads to poor school performance, increased illness, and long-term developmental delays. And the World Bank has been blunt: the persistence of undernutrition in Filipino children will mean “a staggering loss” of human and economic potential for the country.
CFDC’s mission, therefore, is vital to nationbuilding. We are powered by some of the country’s most active civic and humanitarian organizations: Rotary International, Lions Club International, Kiwanis International, Junior Chamber International, the Freemasons, the Philippine Eagles, Knights of Columbus, Knights of Rizal, Save the Children Philippines, World Vision Philippines, the Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen and Professionals, the Philippine League of Government and Private Midwives, Crusade Against Violence, and many others.
Last Sunday’s concert was a vivid reminder of what we can achieve when compassion becomes collective action. We sang, we celebrated the season, and we stood united for a generation of Filipinos whose voices cannot yet be heard. The music that echoed through Tent City was for the future of needy Filipino children — promising them hope, nourishment, and the chance to become everything they are meant to be. ([email protected])
