BACOLOD CITY - This highly-urbanized city evacuated at least 5,000 people due to heavy flooding in several areas on Tuesday, Nov. 25, triggered by tropical depression “Verbena.”
Rescuers assisted in the evacuation of affected individuals on Tuesday morning, with some residents seeking refuge in roofs as floodwater rose and some vehicles stranded on the road.
Evacuees were from Barangays 2, 3, 10, 14, 18, 35, 36, Taculing, Bata, Banago, Mansilingan, Pahanocoy, Sum-ag, Cabug, Montevista, Alijis, and Singcang-Airport.
The city has provided food and other assistance.
In Barangay 27, a private property wall collapsed and a private volunteer assisted affected individuals.
Due to to heavy and sustained rain, several rivers in this city registered evidently high water levels, according to Mayor Greg Gasataya.
The city continues to monitor the situation and advised residents to remain vigilant, avoid riverbanks and low-lying areas, and be ready to move to safer ground should conditions worsen.
“Your caution and cooperation are essential during this period of heightened rainfall,” Gasataya said.
Heavy flooding was reported in 14 areas, and some roads were impassable for motorcycles, tricycles, and even light and medium vehicles.
Around 370 passengers were stranded at the Bredco port here due to the temporary cancellation of sea trips due to Verbana.
Gasataya suspended classes and work in government offices on Tuesday while the city was under Signal No. 1.
He thanked rescuers, partner volunteer groups, and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) for their dedication and tireless efforts to keep people safe.
“We assure that our teams remain ready to respond,” the mayor said.
