DAVAO CITY – The Davao City government welcomed the new developments at Davao Global Township on McArthur Highway here as the township introduced at least 20 incoming business establishments during its annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony on Sunday night, Nov. 23.

DGT marked the start of the holiday season with the lighting of a 50-foot Christmas tree, aligning with this year’s theme “Timeless Christmas at DGT.”

Davaoeños gathered for the celebration that concluded with a free concert headlined by Original Pilipino Music band Silent Sanctuary.

Committee on City-owned Real Properties chairman Councilor J. Melchor Quitain Jr., who represented acting Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte, said the growing interest of businesses in DGT shows the city’s continued economic expansion.

“This is very good for Davao City,” Quitain said, recalling the inauguration of De La Salle University here earlier. “More schools mean more chances for Davaoeños to get quality education. You don’t have to travel to Manila because we already have De La Salle here.”

Quitain described the development as another milestone for the city. “It is another year for the city of resilience and progress, and of course, further developments and expansions at DGT,” he said, congratulating the people behind the township, the developments, and the city.

Duterte, in a message read by Quitain, extended holiday greetings to the DGT, commending their efforts to create a vibrant and inclusive community space. He said the township’s developments contribute to Davao City’s goal of betterment.

“The Christmas tree lighting has long been a cherished tradition,” Duterte said. “Your developments contribute to our goal of positioning the city as a competitive and promising business hub—generating more employment, supporting businesses, and furthering economic growth.”

“We extend our sincere gratitude to the DGT and your esteemed partners and linkages for fostering an inclusive environment and creating a space for people, businesses, and cultural pride,” he said, adding that the event unites everyone and shows their commitment to sharing joy and hope.

Cebu Landmasters Inc. Chief Operating Officer Jose Franco Soberano thanked city officials and the public for their support, emphasizing that the DGT and its central park were built for the people of Davao, as the company aims to demonstrate that Davao is a world-class destination.

“We always want to have events here. DGT is really for you. We will have more restaurants and shops opening very soon. We want to show that we are world-class here in Davao – not just the projects, but also the people,” Soberano said.

CLI Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jose Soberano III echoed his son’s words, assuring that future developments are underway, including additional restaurants, condominiums, and enhanced public spaces. All these, he said, are for the city. They also commended the leaders here.

YHEST Realty and Development Corp. President Frederick Yuson highlighted the township’s transformation from Mindanao’s oldest golf course into a modern urban development.

He said it’s about time to give back to the community, confirming that they will also build a mall at DGT.

“A lot of people would benefit from the place,” Yuson said, citing that around 1,500 runners joined the fun run earlier in the morning on Sunday, with proceeds earmarked for the House of Hope, a foundation dedicated to supporting children undergoing cancer treatment.

In the spirit of giving, Yuson announced a P500,000 donation for cancer patients at the House of Hope in Davao City, strengthening its continued support for the foundation and embracing the true meaning of Christmas.

Soberano also shared the importance of helping these children.

Department of Tourism–Davao Region Director Tanya Rabat-Tan, speaking on behalf of their Secretary Christina Frasco, underscored the importance of unity and compassion during the holiday season. She said Christmas reminds everyone to be a beacon of kindness, generosity, and love.
