CEBU CITY – The city of Danao in northern Cebu province bagged five major awards in the recent awarding ceremony of the Drug Abuse Prevention and Control (DAPC) Week.
The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Central Visayas (PDEA-7), in partnership with the Cebu City government and the Regional Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs Coordinating Group, spearheaded the holding of the annual DAPC Week, which is observed every third week of November as mandated by Presidential Proclamation No. 124.
Danao was one of the local government units awarded for establishing and sustaining operational Balay Silangan Drug Reformation Centers, which provides drug reformists with appropriate interventions programs.
The city also received an award for formulating, implementing, and sustaining responsive innovations in the anti-illegal drug campaign.
Danao was also awarded as “champion of community-based drug rehabilitation program, champion of community-based anti-illegal drug advocacy, and champion of drug-free workplace program.”
“It is a huge honor for the city of Danao to receive five majors awards from the PDEA. It’s a strong testament of our united and continued stand against illegal drugs,” Danao Vice Mayor Ivy Durano said.
Durano, the former chief of the Cebu Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Office, commended the city’s anti-drug office for implementing programs meant to protect the community from the menace of illegal drugs.
“These awards showed genuine, strong, and committed leadership of Mayor Nito Durano in building a safe, healthy, and strong commnunity,” the vice mayor added.
Graced by PDEA Director General Isagani R. Nerez, the awarding ceremony was held on Nov. 21 at the IC3 Convention Center here.
The activity was organized to recognize the exemplary contributions of various government and non-government organizations to the region’s intensified anti-illegal drug campaign in Central Visayas.
“We emphasize on the truth that cannot be overstated: No single person, organization, or institution can win the fight against illegal drugs alone. Victory comes only through the partnership of all the national government agencies, local government units, private sectors, and the communities,” said Nerez.
Nerez emphasized that local government units “are in the best position to identify the most appropriate and transformative programs for their communities.”
“Equally important is the role of the private sector. For our programs to be sustainable, we need partners who step in where government capacities are limited. They serve as our force multipliers, our advocates, and our champions in ensuring that our gains in this campaign are preserved and strengthened,” Nerez added.
