Motorcycle rider dies after being run over by bus in Sampaloc, Manila
A 25-year-old motorcycle rider died after being run over by a passenger bus along Mabini Bridge in Sampaloc, Manila on Saturday night, Nov. 22.
Based on CCTV footage from Barangay 411, the rider hit a deep pothole while ascending the bridge, causing him to lose control of his motorcycle and fall.
The impact sent him sliding underneath a nearby bus, while his newly repaired motorcycle was left on the road.
Barangay authorities said rescuers had to lift the bus to retrieve the victim’s body.
The rider, who was wearing a helmet but only slippers at the time of the incident, was declared dead on the spot. His family, residents of Pandacan, arrived shortly after but declined to give any statement.
The bus driver is currently held by the Manila District Traffic Enforcement Unit (MDTEU) as investigators continue to determine liability.
He may face charges of Reckless Imprudence Resulting in Homicide and Damage to Property.
Motorists have long complained about the hazardous condition of the affected portion of Mabini Bridge.
Residents also point out that poor lighting on parts of the bridge worsens the danger, making it difficult for riders to see road defects at night.
They noted that fatal incidents occur there almost every year.
Barangay officials confirmed that the location has recorded multiple accidents and reiterated calls for the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to urgently repair the potholes and improve safety features on the bridge.
