5,000 youths, civic orgs join 'Lakad Kontra Droga' in Mandaluyong
Around 5,000 participants from barangays, schools, youth groups, civic organizations, and workplaces joined the “Lakad Kontra Droga” to promote an active, healthy lifestyle and strengthen community involvement in the fight against illegal drugs in Mandaluyong City on Sunday, Nov. 23.
The Unity Walk kicked off at the San Francisco Open Canal and was led by the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) as part of Mandaluyong’s annual tradition for Drug Abuse Prevention and Control (DAPC) Week 2025. This year’s simultaneous walk served as a strong display of community support for reinforcing drug prevention programs.
Mandaluyong City Mayor Carmelita Abalos, DDB Chairperson Secretary Oscar Valenzuela, and former Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Atty. Benhur Abalos delivered their messages, highlighting the essential role of unified efforts between the government and the public in strengthening the campaign.
Valenzuela expressed gratitude to the mayor and all participants, saying their presence was a clear testament to their commitment to sustaining the activities of DAPC Week.
He stressed that DAPC Week serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility to protect the youth and families in their everyday lives.
He added that drug prevention relies on the choices individuals make and the cooperation of all sectors of society.
“Ang tunay na laban kontra droga ay hindi nagwawakas dito. Patuloy nating palaganapin ang pagkakaisa sa bawat araw sapagkat ang Bagong Pilipinas ay pinapahalagahan ang kalusugan at ang droga ay inaayawan (The true fight against illegal drugs does not stop here. Let us continue to strengthen our unity each day, because Bagong Pilipinas values the health of every Filipino and firmly chooses a life free from drugs),” Valenzuela said.
According to the DDB, the activity demonstrated that the real strength of the anti-drug campaign lies in the collective action of the people.
“Sa bawat hakbang na sabay-sabay nilang ginawa, malinaw ang mensahe: may saysay ang pagkakaisa at may epekto ang pakikilahok. Ang pag-iwas sa droga ay hindi lamang panawagan ng pamahalaan, ito ay pangakong pinaninindigan ng komunidad para sa kinabukasan ng kanilang mga pamilya (With every synchronized step, the message was clear: unity matters, and participation creates impact. Drug prevention is not only a government initiative; it is a promise upheld by the community for the future of their families),” it stated.
Meanwhile, the Mandaluyong City Police Station (Mandaluyong CPS) said the activity also aimed to strengthen police-community relations, encourage public participation in the government’s anti-drug efforts, and reinforce the shared goal of building a safer, drug-free Mandaluyong City.
