Far Eastern University held its ground and repelled University of the East’s late surge to prevail, 84-77, and keep its Final Four bid alive in the UAAP Season 88 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday, Nov. 22.
After squandering a 41-25 halftime lead, Kirby Mongcopa and Mo Konateh reignited the Tamaraws’ counterattack mainly in the fourth, where they joined forces with Janrey Pasaol to pull away to a 71-58 lead and kept the team safely ahead of the Red Warriors’ late fightback.
Refusing to give up, Wello Lingolingo and Precious Momowei staged a run that cut UE’s deficit to just five, 82-77. They forced FEU into a turnover in the following possession but they ultimately failed to convert.
The Tamaraws improved to 6-7 for a share of fifth spot with Adamson, with one game left against the University of Santo Tomas Tigers on Wednesday, Nov. 26.
The Red Warriors, meanwhile, concluded their campaign without a win in all their 14 games, while absorbing their 19th straight defeat since the second round of Season 87.
This also marked the second time UE ended its campaign winless in the Final Four era. They suffered a similar fate in 2022.
Konateh impressed with 15 points and eight rebounds for FEU, while rookie Mongcopa dazzled with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds which went with six assists, one block, and one steal.
Pasaol, for his part, posted 12 points, six assists, and four steals, while Jorick Baustista, who carried the cudgel in the first three frames, topscored with 17 points with three rebounds, six assists, and one steal. Neil Owens added 10 points.
Momowei, on the other hand, collected 19 points, 14 rebounds, one assist, one block, and four steals in a losing effort for UE, while Lingolingo chipped in 14 points. Da Caoile and Nico Mulingtapang uncorked 10 points each.
Aside from sharing the fifth spot with Adamson (6-7), FEU’s win made the final two spots for semis much more interesting as it could possibly build a four or five-way tie with University of Santo Tomas (7-5), De La Salle (6-6), and even with Ateneo (5-7).
And it could happen even if the Green Archers complete their sweep over reigning champion University of the Philippines (10-3) in their rematch later tonight.
