PH students gear up for 2025 Mathematics and Science Challenge
Forty-eight Filipino students will strive for excellence as they take part in the 2025 World Mathematics and Science Challenge (WMSC) which the Philippines is hosting this December.
The math and science prodigies from various public and private schools across the country will compete against their counterparts from 12 other countries during the event, slated December 15 to 18 in Zamboanga City.
Aside from the Philippines, the following nations have, so far, confirmed their participation in the contest: China, Taiwan, India, Hong Kong, Macau, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Bulgaria.
The staging of the WMSC was earlier set in November, but was moved to December due to the recent spate of earthquakes that struck Cebu and parts of eastern Mindanao.
Dr. Simon Chua, head of the host group Mathematics Trainers' Guild Phils. (MTG) had explained "concerns were raised by some parents from participating countries regarding the safety of their children competing in the WMSC."
"Their concerns are absoutely valid," he stressed as he also assured MTG's foreign guess the welare and security of all delegates are the hosts' utmost concern.
The tilt's individual and team contests will be held on December 16.
According to Chua, "12 students will be fielded by each team in both the math and science divisions, composed of four students each in the middle primary upper primary and junior high school levels."
"As host city, Zamboanga will deploy public and private school teams each with 12 members in the same math and science divisions," Chua disclosed.
Gold, silver and bronze medals, as well as merit certificates await top-scoring students while trophies will be awarded to team champions and their runners-up.
Expected to grace the WMSC are Zamboanga Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso, Vice Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar, Rep. Katrina Reiko Chua-tai, City Council members, as well as Dep Ed Regional Director Dr. Ruth Fuentes and DOST Region 9 OIC Jennifer Pidor.
Also in the MTG guest list are Dr. Ridwan Saputra, WMSC chair and math consultant of Indonesia, and Haji Mohd Hafiz bin Mohd Salleh of the Corporate Communications Unit, Keddah State Education Dept., Malaysian Ministry of Education.
Aside from a festive cultural program, WMSC delegates will also be treated to a sightseeing tour of Zamboanga City, which is known for its rich history and a unique blend of Spanish, indigenous and Islamic influences.
Regarded as the country's third oldest city, Zamboanga was founded by the Spaniards in 163. It is famous for its annual Hermosa Festival, also Fort Pilar, a 17th century fortress which features a very popular Marian shrine, and the Pink Sand Beach on Sta. Cruz Island, among other attractions.
The WMSC aims to "provide math and science aces a platform to explore diverse cultures, exchange innovative educational practices and cultivate their natural talents through competitive experiences."
"Ultimately, the goal is to foster a worldwide community of learners and educators dedicated to advancing math and science education," Chua also emphasized.
MTG officials noted that since 1995, public and private school students mentored by the group have made the nation proud by winning medals in both local and foreign contests.
"We hope they would continue to inspire the younger generation of Filipino math and science prodigies," they added.
