The late Juan Ponce Enrile, former defense minister, Senate President, and Chief Presidential Legal Counsel, was laid to rest at the Libingan ng Mga Bayani in Taguig City on Saturday, Nov. 22.
Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. joined Enrile’s daughter and son, Katrina and Jack, and other family members during the interment ceremony in honor of his more than five-decade-long service in government.
The interment ceremony at the national shrine featured a funeral march and a ceremonial flower drop from a Philippine Air Force (PAF) helicopter, a traditional tribute for distinguished public servants.
Those who attended were given a final opportunity to pay their respects to Enrile’s remains after the closing benediction.
Major General Francisco F. Lorenzo Jr., acting Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) vice chief of staff and commander of AFP Education, Training and Doctrine Command (ETDC), served as the military host for the rites.
Prior to the interment, a Holy Mass was held at the Sanctuario de San Antonio Parish in Makati City which was attended by Enrile’s immediate family, relatives, friends, and supporters.
Earlier this week, AFP Chief General Romeo S. Brawner Jr. conducted a necrological service at Camp Aguinaldo, rendering full military honors in recognition of Enrile’s contributions to national defense and public service.
“The AFP extends its condolences to the Enrile family and honors his long career in public service and contributions to national security,” the military said in a statement.
Enrile passed away on Nov. 13 at the age of 101 after being hospitalized due to pneumonia.
He served as defense minister from 1970 to 1971, resigning in August of that same year to run for Senate where he eventually lost, and was reappointed in the same position from 1972 until November 1986.
Under his tenure, the national security apparatus such as the military, constabulary, and police-like forces, was tightly integrated during the regime of then president Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
As defense secretary, Enrile saw the imposition of martial law in 1972, which was marked by widespread human rights abuses and increased militarization of policing and constabulary functions.
But in 1986, his defection from the Marcos regime helped trigger the historic People Power uprising that led to the ouster of the dictator.
Aside from being a defense minister, Enrile also served various posts in the government such as Senate President from 2008 to 2013, and Chief Presidential Legal Counsel from 2022 until his death, among others.
