CEBU CITY – Tanzanian boxer Mchanja Yohana had a forgettable experience in his first foray in the Philippines almost two years ago.
Yohana is back on Philippine soil and guaranteed that his second tour of duty in the country is going to be a pleasant one as he vowed to conquer one of the rising Filipino boxers.
Yohana will be taking on the very skilled Regie Suganob in the main event of “Kumong Bol-anon 23” on Saturday, Nov. 22, at the PMI Bohol Main Campus in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.
The two fighters sounded confident when they faced each other during the card’s weigh-in proceedings on Friday, Nov. 21.
Yohana is determined to erase the bitter memory of his unanimous decision loss to Milan Melindo last Dec. 29, 2023 at the SM Seaside City Cebu.
“That was the last time. Now it’s different. We came back prepared. We’re here to win,” he said.
The 27-year-old Yohana insisted that not even Suganob’s so-called homecourt advantage could stop him from fulfilling his mission.
“Our preparation for this fight went very well. We’re ready. As you can see, we’re already here, and that means we’re ready to fight,” Yohana said through a translator.
The two fighters, who both tipped the scales at 109.7 pounds, are scheduled to fight for 10 rounds in a bout with no title at stake but has so much implications in their world title aspirations.
Since that loss to Melindo, Yohana has put up eight straight wins, a searing run that saw him capture the WBO Global flyweight title. Sporting a 22 win, six loss, one draw, and 15KOs record, Yohana is currently No. 8 in the WBO flyweight world rankings.
Beating Suganob may be easier said than done. The 28-year-Boholano fighter has a 16 win, one loss, and six knockouts record and is currently ranked No. 4 in the WBO, No. 9 in the WBC, and No. 11 in the IBF light flyweight division.
Suganob last fought in Dec. 24 last year but rustiness will never be an issue, he assured.
He even welcomed the lull as it gave him time to sharpen his arsenal.
“I have not fought for almost one year but I maintained the training. I reviewed and improved where I think I was lacking. I’m in tip-top shape,” said Suganob, considered as the face of PMI Bohol Boxing Stable.
Just like his opponent, Suganob is confident of securing a fourth straight win. “I am confident that I am going to win but I will not be complacent because I am going up against a world-rated opponent,” Suganob said.
In the co-main event, Suganob’s stablemate Leonard Pores III will take on Cebu-based Japanese fighter Kiyoto Narukami of the ZIP Sanman Boxing Team for the IBF Youth flyweight title.
Other fights will pit Freshler Utrera versus Sherwin Dacullo, John Vergil Vitor versus Alven Vergara, Gerwin Asilo versus Yeroge Gura, Jericho Acaylar versus Francis Arante, and Jick-Kier Autida versus John Paul Oyong.
