Several youth groups and student organizations staged a lightning protest at the Mendiola Peace Arch in Manila on Friday, Nov. 21, urging President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., Vice President Sara Duterte, and all public officials involved in rampant corruption to resign and be held accountable for actions that have brought hardships to Filipinos.
According to the groups, the demonstration was part of their National Day of Walkout, in which students from various schools and universities across Quezon City and Manila, along with other progressive youth organizations, marched to Mendiola to air their grievances and express dismay at the current administration.
The protest comes amid reports that more politicians are implicated in the flood control projects scandal and other forms of corruption.
One of the participating groups, Youth Rage Against Corruption, proposed the creation of a "transition council" to ensure that corrupt politicians are held accountable for their crimes.
The proposed council would also spearhead the implementation of effective economic and political reforms that would truly benefit Filipinos.
On Nov. 19, Kilusang Bayan Kontra Kurakot (KBKK) announced that another mass rally will be held on Nov. 30 in Luneta, dubbed as "Baha sa Luneta 2.0," to condemn corruption in government.
Meanwhile, the organizers of the "Trillion Peso March" will also conduct a similar demonstration at the People Power Monument in Quezon City on the same day.
During a meeting, Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas Chairperson Danilo Ramos stressed that as long as no one is held accountable for corruption, protests demanding for transparency and accountability will continue nationwide.
“The people are determined that as long as no one is held accountable, no one is resigning, and the system is not yet changed, we will continue with our demonstrations,” Ramos said.
