De La Salle looks to bolster its semifinal bid when it locks horns with reigning champion University of the Philippines in the UAAP Season 88 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday, Nov. 22.
The Green Archers (6-6) are in a must-win situation as a triumph against the Fighting Maroons (10-3) in their 4:30 p.m. showdown would give them a solid grip on the fourth spot and possibly the last semis berth.
Far Eastern University (5-7), meanwhile, also seeks to keep its Final Four bid alive when it meets the slumping University of the East (0-13) in their 1:30 p.m. duel.
Coming off two heartbreaking one-point losses to Adamson (61-60) and FEU (84-83), the Taft-based squad clearly felt the absence of key gunners Mason Amos and Kean Baclaan, with skipper Mike Phillips and Jacob Cortez lacking the rhythm on the offensive end especially in their previous match against the Falcons.
With the two stars firing blanks, Vhoris Marasigan and EJ Gollena were the only double-digit scorers for La Salle with 15 and 10 points, respectively.
Though the Archers edged the Maroons in their first-round meeting, 72-69, last Oct. 19 at the same venue, the challenge promises to be tougher this time.
After all, State U is eyeing not only a payback win over La Salle but also a chance to steal the top spot from National University (11-2).
“Kailangan naming maging consistent against La Salle, and tapusin ‘yong second round ng maayos,” said Gerry Abadiano, who steered UP to a come-from-behind 79-75 win over Ateneo last Wednesday.
“I’ll tell you the same mindset coming into the season, consistency. Try to stay consistent, try to play with effort, try to play and accept my role, and doing what I can do to help the team win,” added Francis Nnoruka.
Abadiano and Nnoruka alongside Noy Remogat, Reyland Torres, Harold Alarcon, Gani Stevens, Terrence Fortea and Jacob Bayla banner UP as they try to spoil the hopes of their rival La Salle.
Meanwhile, FEU, sitting at sixth spot alongside Ateneo, goes for a climb in the standings against UE, which is aiming to end its 18th consecutive loss starting from last season.
Boosted by a stunning victory over La Salle, the Tamaraws bank anew on rising stars Janrey Pasaol, Jorick Baustista, Jedric Daa, and Kirby Mongcopa with Mo Konateh leading the backcourt of the Sean Chambers-mentored crew.
Wello Lingolingo and Precious Momowei spearhead the John Abate-less Red Warriors alongside emerging guards in Topher Lagat and Dylan Despi for a breakthrough win.
