K-pop group TWICE's Chaeyoung diagnosed with vasovagal syncope
K-pop girl group TWICE member Chaeyoung will be taking time off due to a health issue.
JYP Entertainment, TWICE’s agency, announced on Nov. 20 that Chaeyoung, 26, has been diagnosed with vasovagal syncope and needs to rest.
“We would like to provide an official update regarding TWICE member Chaeyoung and her current health status. Chaeyoung was recently diagnosed with vasovagal syncope and has been advised to take a period of rest based on medical consultations,” it said.
It added, “Based on additional evaluations, medical advice, and in depth discussions, it has been concluded that Chaeyoung needs further time for recovery. As a result, she will temporarily pause her activities through the end of the year in order to prioritize her health and rest.”
“Vasovagal syncope occurs when the vagus nerve, which carries signals from the brain to the rest of the body and controls functions including heart rate and blood pressure, becomes overstimulated in response to triggers such as stress, dehydration, or donating blood. The heart rate slows and blood vessels widen, causing a drop in blood pressure and reduced blood flow to the brain. This can lead to a loss of consciousness,” according to an article published on the Harvard Health Publishing.
It added that the common triggers of vasovagal syncope are “prolonged standing, standing up too quickly from a sitting position, having blood drawn or donating blood, the sight of blood, dehydration, intense pain (such as from a back spasm), sudden emotional stress or physical trauma.”
JYP Entertainment stated that “in line with medical guidance placing her health as the highest priority, Chaeyoung will be participating in upcoming schedules only to a limited extent and may be absent from certain commitments.”
It said Chaeyoung will be absent from TWICE’s “This Is For” World Tour in Kaohsiung, Hong Kong, and Bangkok. She did not participate in the concerts in Kuala Lumpur, Sydney and Melbourne.
“We also regret to inform you that she will not be joining the World Tour stops in Kaohsiung, Hong Kong, and Bangkok, and Chaeyoung herself feels deeply disappointed about this. She also expressed her sincere apologies once again for not being able to participate in fan events and This Is For World Tour since October,” the agency said.
It added, “We understand that this announcement may bring concern, but we sincerely appreciate the understanding and support of all fans during this unfortunate situation. JYP Entertainment will provide full support to ensure that Chaeyoung is able to rest and recover fully.”
