Suiting up in his final UAAP year, veteran guard Gerry Abadiano has embraced a bigger role for reigning champion University of the Philippines as he takes the lead whenever the Maroons need a figure of strength in the endgame.
The 24-year-old Abadiano displayed steely resolve after he caught fire in the fourth to power UP’s come-from-behind 79-75 win over the Ateneo Blue Eagles in the Season 88 men’s basketball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Wednesday, Nov. 19.
“Para sa akin, hindi lang ako tumigil, and time na kailangan ako ng team is naging patient lang ako nung una,” said Abadiano.
“Lagi lang sinasabi lang ni coach Gold and mga teammates ko na maging ready lang lagi,” he added. “Kasi hindi naman araw-araw ganito maipapakita mo.”
The 5-foot-11 guard from IloIlo City poured in 16 of his 18 points in the payoff period which sparked the State U’s assault in the same day Ateneo’s main arsenals in Kymani Ladi, Shawn Tuano, and Jared Bahay all clicked together to threaten their Katipunan neighbors.
“Hindi ko naman hinahanap ‘yong ganung bagay [scoring spree], and dumating lang sya no’ng fourth quarter siguro, sobrang blessed lang ako sa mga teammates ko sa paghanap sakin,” Abadiano stressed.
Abadiano highlighted his game with a personal 8-0 attack to give UP its first taste of the lead which they preserved toward a victory that also earned them the twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four.
“Securing the twice-to-beat advantage is big for us. But then seeing the team bounced back from the first half, I believed we lacked energy no’ng first half,” said UP head coach Goldwin Monteverde.
Before returning in the semis, UP eyes a strong second-round finish against last year’s finals rival De La Salle University which is expected to play its heart out for the last two spots in the Final Four race.
