Eldrew Yulo qualifies for four finals in gymnastics world juniors

Karl Eldrew Yulo carried the fight for Team Philippines after qualifying for four finals in the 3rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics Junior World Championships at Newport World Resorts in Pasay City on Thursday night, Nov. 20.
The promising 17-year-old standout tallied 78.332 points to place 15th in the individual all-around, advancing behind top qualifiers Arsenii Dukhno (82.065), China’s Yang Lanbin (80.698), and Japan’s Nao Ojima (80.631).
Yulo was one of only two Southeast Asians to progress, joining athletes from Singapore, the United States, Italy, France, Colombia, Great Britain, Ukraine, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland, Brazil and Hungary in the 24-gymnast field.
He also emerged as a strong podium contender in the floor exercise, qualifying second with 14.233, just behind Dukhno’s 14.500.
Yulo likewise earned spots in the vault finals after placing fifth with 13.750, and in the horizontal bar finals after finishing sixth with 13.700.
He failed to progress in still rings, where he ranked 27th (12.200) and in the parallel bars after placing 28th (12.666).
Despite his impressive showing, Yulo remains focused.
“My job is not yet finished. Gagalingan ko pa sa finals,” said the younger brother of Olympic double gold medalist Carlos Yulo.
The individual all-around finals are set for Saturday, Nov. 22, while the apparatus finals will take place on Sunday, Nov. 23, and Monday, Nov. 24.
