Beyond function, basketball shoes must be personal

NBA star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander elevates basketball style

For the longest time, sneakers—mainly the ones used for basketball—have usually been designed for function. Brands have explored many ways to help players get maximum comfort, jump high, and run for hours without their footwear giving up on them. They have tested advanced cushioning for the soles, innovative textiles, and designs for the support structure. But when it comes to personal touch, no machine or tech can match the power of storytelling.

It was in the ’80s when sneakers broke out of the court and into people’s wardrobes, thanks to superstar players and hip-hop culture. Today, brands are collaborating with artists, designers, and even athletes to add a personal touch to their shoes.
Yes, even something that was purely functional in the beginning, like basketball shoes, is now an extension of one’s storytelling. They represent the duality of a person, from their love for the sport to their expression of style, identity, and culture.
The same can be said about Converse’s latest iterations of the Shai 001 basketball shoes. Designed by Converse Basketball’s creative director, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the shoes capture everything a player needs and also Shai’s story, which many will find relatable.

The new chapter of the signature shoes was unveiled in October and centers on three new colors representing the important people who shaped Shai’s world. Aptly titled “The Family,” the collection features colorways that offer a deeper look into the mindset of an athlete who plays with purpose and lives with intention.

First is Charm Black, an homage to his mother, Charmaine. Black is her favorite color and something that mirrors her elegance. The dark tone is also a nod to Shai’s calm, composed, and merciless demeanor on the court.
Next is Hail Clay, a caramel color inspired by the eye color of his wife, Hailey. It’s a colorway that speaks to love, support, and the power behind Shai’s game.
Last is Masi Blue, reminiscent of the cool, stoic energy shared between Shai and his brother, Thomasi. Much like their hometown of Hamilton, Ontario, the colorway embodies the chill of fierce winters and the bond of brotherhood.
Apart from the personal aspect, the basketball shoes also feature the same elite-level performance design: a radial traction pattern for multidirectional control, forefoot Zoom Air for responsive energy return, and an over-lasted midsole for stability. Built to move the way Shai does—fluid, consistent, precise, and always shifting.
