Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso signed a partnership agreement on Thursday, Nov. 20, launching the Manila Academic–Public Library Educational Consortium aimed at further enhancing the literacy capability of Manileños.
Domagoso explained the consortium, which brings together the Manila City Library, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, Universidad de Manila, Eulogio “Amang” Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology, and the Schools Division Office–Manila, is an initiative designed to link the city’s public libraries with major academic institutions.
This creates a unified framework for literacy programs and shared educational services in Manila.
The program also allows the learning resources of the partner academic institutions to be more accessible to the public.
According to the consortium's objectives, member institutions will collaborate on library programs, training, technical services such as cataloguing, and collective approaches to developing their collections.
It also aims to broaden access to books, journals, digital media, and other learning materials for students, faculty, researchers, and community learners.
"A shared online catalog and integrated library system will be developed to connect the collections of all participating libraries. Joint training sessions, workshops, and professional development programs for library staff are also part of the initial commitments," Domagoso explained.
During the signing event, the member institutions also began aligning inter-library cooperation standards to support citywide literacy and research efforts.
Preserve our love for reading
In October, the mayor underscored the importance of public libraries and reading books to ensure the quality of learning of the youth and preserve the people's love of reading for generations.
"Para sa patuloy na pag-unlad ng ating lungsod, at upang masiguro na maipasa natin sa susunod na henerasyon ang kultura at kasaysayan ng ating bansa, atin pong pahalagahan ang kahalagahan ng ating mga silid-aklatan (For the continued development of our city, and to ensure that we pass on the culture and history of our country to the next generation, let us appreciate the importance of our libraries)," Domagoso said during the launch of the Manila City Library's newest building.
"Hinihikayat ko po ang lahat na gamitin at bisitahin ang mga pampublikong silid-aklatan sa Lungsod ng Maynila (I encourage everyone to use and visit the public libraries in the City of Manila)," he added.
The Manila City Library's new main office is located along A.H. Lacson Avenue corner Aragon Street in Sampaloc.
It is equipped with an up-to-date roster of books and other educational materials that are essential to address the growing needs of the current generation.
