The Duterte family has no right to act as crusaders of accountability.
This, in a nutshell, was Akbayan Party-list Rep. Perci Cendaña's message to the Dutertes, which he looked at side-eyed after they joined calls for President Marcos to answer the allegations of corruption against him, particularly on the flood control projects issue.
Cendaña targeted Vice President Sara Duterte in particular as he explained his point.
"Simple naman. Iharap muna nila sa kanilang sarili ang salamin (It’s simple. They should first face the mirror themselves)," the outspoken solon said of the former First Family.
"Kasi sila ay nagsasalita on this issue, hanggang ngayon unresolved pa rin yung mga ni-raise natin na mga pinto doon sa impeachment complaint laban kay VP Sara Duterte pagdating sa kanyang paglustay sa kaban ng bayan," Cendaña noted.
(Because they are speaking on this issue, yet up to now the points we raised in the impeachment complaint against VP Sara Duterte regarding her misuse of public funds remain unresolved.)
"Sabi nga natin, wala silang K (karapatan). Kinikilala natin yung karapatan nila bilang mamamayan na magsalita, pero wala silang K pagdating sa usaping ito (As we have said, they have no standing. We recognize their right as citizens to speak, but they have no standing when it comes to this matter)," 'Mader Perci' bluntly said.
It can be recalled that Cendaña endorsed the first of four impeachment complaints filed against Vice President Duterte during the previous 19th Congress.
The lady official ended up getting impeached by the House of Representatives on Feb. 5, 2025. Among her articles of impeachment was the alleged misuse of P612.5 million worth of confidential funds--something that was never explained as per Cendaña.
The Supreme Court (SC) eventually struck down the impeachment complaint for unconstitutionality, while Vice President Duterte's Senate impeachment trial--constitutionally mandated to be held forthwith or immediately--never pushed through.
