TACLOBAN CITY – Northern Samar Rep. Edwin Ongchuan, Gov. Harris Ongchuan, and Biri, Northern Samar Mayor Antonio de los Reyes Jr. received the official declaration from the National Committee on Geological Sciences (NCGS) naming Biri Rock Formations as a National Geological Monument (NGM) in a ceremony on Tuesday.
Biri Rock Formations made a formal bid for a UNESCO Global Geopark status on June 4, 2025.
Dr. Kevin Garas, Supervising Geologist of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, presented the committee's basis for designating Biri Rocks as an NGM.
He emphasized its geological characteristics, scientific importance, uniqueness, and beauty.
Geological studies by researchers from the University of the Philippines-National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) support the recognition of the site as a natural treasure.
The site features tilted marine sedimentary sequences of conglomerates, sandstones, siltstones, and shales formed approximately 15 to 20 million years ago, sculpted by tectonic and wave processes into seven islets.
A feature of the Biri Rocks is the presence of phonolite and analcime clasts in conglomerate sandstone strata, which unravel the magmatic history of the province's alkaline rocks.
NCGS launched the Biri Rocks as the new NGM site, holding geological significance next to Montalban Gorge, Taal Volcano, Ilocos Norte Sand Dunes, Hundred Islands, Saint Paul Limestone Formation, and Chocolate Hills.
The last NGM declaration occurred over two decades ago.
A marker with geological evolution and a declaration statement for the Biri Rocks National Geological Monument will be installed at the Magasang Rock Formation.
Rep. Ongchuan committed to help the provincial government achieve full UNESCO Global Geopark accreditation.
He called on all sectors to join in shaping a future where Northern Samar embraces sustainable, heritage-based, and inclusive development.
