Sobriety and accountability in the face of outrage

Last Nov. 15, Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), issued a measured but powerful appeal. He declared that, as the public’s anger over rampant corruption surges, Filipinos must demand clarity, not conjecture; truth, not rumor; accountability, not manipulation. His call for “honesty, courage, and responsibility” could not have been more timely, coming on the eve of a historic wave of mass action.
From Nov. 16 to 18, hundreds of thousands are converging at Quirino Grandstand in Manila for a rally organized by the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC), under banners of “transparency, accountability, justice, and peace.” This will be followed on Nov. 30 by what organizers are calling a second Trillion Peso March at the People Power Monument — a broad, interfaith, civil-society demonstration demanding justice, restitution, and reform.
Cardinal David’s Nov.15 statement is not just a reminder. It establishes guardrails for this rising tide of indignation. He warns against “political exploitation” of the flood-control corruption scandal, emphasizing that public anger must not be hijacked for partisan ends. The CBCP under his leadership insists that the demand for justice must be pursued through due process, within the law, and not be comingled with political motives.
That is vital, because the forces behind the protests are unusually broad and diverse.
At the INC’s three-day rally, membership will swell not only from its own faithful but also from those outside the church who share the clamor for a proper, transparent investigation. In parallel, the Nov. 30 Trillion Peso March is backed by a sweeping coalition: the Church Leaders Council for National Transformation, civil-society groups, trade unions, youth organizations, and even lay and progressive civic movements. Student walkouts, candlelight vigils, prayer rallies, and even weekly Friday actions have already built momentum.
The participation of such a wide spectrum — students, religious groups, public servants, unions, youth, and lay organizations — speaks to a turning point in our national consciousness. This is no longer simply a protest against one scandal; it is a moral reckoning. Cardinal David himself has framed corruption not just as a crime, but as a sin that robs communities of dignity and steals opportunities from future generations.
Such a moral stand must now be translated into intelligent civic engagement. The challenge for Filipinos — especially young people — is not merely to vent outrage, but to channel it into tangible pressure for institutional reform. As Cardinal David has urged, let us press for real restitution, comprehensive investigations, and systemic transparency in government transactions.
Looking forward, the stakes in the 2028 national elections could not be higher. The movements unfolding now are doing more than demanding accountability in the moment: they are building a more informed and awakened citizenry. If sustained, this energy can reshape how Filipinos choose leaders, rooting our political future in integrity and not patronage.
The Nov.16–18 rally and the Nov. 30 march are not ends in themselves. They are signposts that strongly declare Filipinos will no longer accept business as usual; and reminders that public office is a sacred trust. It is also a clarion call to all — church, youth, civil society, and government — to act with sobriety, transparency, and courage.
To heed the call for enlightened protest and refuse manipulation by unscrupulous rabble-rousers involves a renewal of commitment to vigilance in support of the democratic imperative. Let us broaden our perspective and look beyond current events. The national elections that will unfold in the not-too-distant future must enable the installation of accountable leadership that will restore the people’s engagement in a vibrant democracy.
