"It's a different experience for me. So I'm a storyteller. It shouldn't matter whether you watch it on a big or a small screen. A good story is a good story. Ito namang mga kwento na ito ay talaga namang solid at ipinagmamalaki namin dahil pinaghirapan at binusisi. Ang nakakatakot dito ay hindi lang siya galing sa imagination. Nangyari ito sa totoong buhay at inspired by true events. (These stories are really solid, and we're proud of them because they were worked on and scrutinized. What's scary about this is that it's not just from imagination. It happened in real life and was inspired by true events)," said Jessica during the media conference for the upcoming horror flick "KMJS' Gabi ng Lagim The Movie," held in Quezon City recently.
Jessica also revealed that, surprisingly, her greatest fear is not supernatural.
"Ang fear ko is yung downward spiral. Yung magtuloy-tuloy itong masamang situation sa ating lipunan at hind tayo makaahon. (My fear is the downward spiral. That this bad situation in our society will continue, and we won't be able to get out of it.)"
"Nakakatakot eh. Yung mga kurakot okay na sila eh. They can leave anytime dahil marami na silang nakurakot na yaman. (It's scary. The corrupt ones are okay. They can leave anytime because they've already stolen a lot of wealth.)"
"Paano naman tayo? Mga araw-araw nagsisikap na mabuhay sa ating bansa. Yun ang nakakatakot. (What about us? Those who try to survive every day in our country. That's what's scary.)"
"Nakita na natin ito eh. Noong 1980s sumama ang reputation ng Pilipinas. Lumayas ang mga investor at nagkaroon ng capital flight. Bumagsak ang economy. (We've seen this before. In the 1980s, the Philippines' reputation took a hit. Investors fled, triggering capital flight. The economy collapsed.)"
"Na-survive naman natin pero sana naman huwag na magkaroon ng round two. Tama na! (We survived, but I hope there won't be a round two. Enough!)" Jessica explained.
A "downward spiral" is a cycle in which a series of adverse events or feelings becomes cyclical, with each event or feeling worsening the next, making the entire process increasingly difficult to control.
'KMJS' Gabi ng Lagim'
From the team behind the Philippines’ longest-running, most-watched, and most-acclaimed television news magazine — and the producers of the 2023 and 2024 MMFF Best Pictures Firefly and Green Bones (GMA Pictures) — comes KMJS’ Gabi ng Lagim The Movie.
For more than a decade, Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho’s Gabi ng Lagim has been the most popular and highly anticipated Halloween special on Philippine television.
From ghost stories to supernatural beings, urban legends, and demonic possessions, it has consistently showcased real people’s paranormal encounters, supported by facts and investigations. It also stands as the country’s most viewed Halloween special online, with over 700 million views since 2013. Its cinematic reenactments, directed by some of the country’s top filmmakers, complete the show’s unforgettable Halloween experience.
This year, the phenomenal annual Halloween special breaks new ground as it makes its way to the big screen, featuring three distinct stories to be directed by acclaimed filmmakers Yam Laranas, Dodo Dayao, and GMA Public Affairs’ homegrown talent, King Mark Baco.
Miguel Tanfelix banners “Pocong,” where a cadet seafarer’s first voyage turns terrifying when he encounters some hauntings aboard his ship, revealing truths more horrifying and disturbing than any ghosts.
Written by Onay Sales-Camero and Yam Laranas, and directed by Laranas, the film also features Kristoffer Martin, Jon Lucas, Phi Palmos, Art Acuña, Karl Medina, Arra San Agustin, Elijah Alejo, Gilleth Sandico, and Eva Darren.
Sanya Lopez headlines “Berbalang,” written and directed by Dodo Dayao, DGPI. When a freshly murdered body is stolen from the town morgue, the police chief thinks he’s dealing with one of the townspeople – until whispers of a flesh-eating creature known as the berbalang begin to surface. Soon, the line between myth and reality starts to blur — leading everyone to confront something far more terrifying than they could ever imagine.
Also part of the cast are Elijah Canlas, Rocco Nacino, Mikoy Morales, Jojit Lorenzo, Nicco Manalo, Charles Salazar, Joel Saracho, and Skelly Skelly.
Rounding out the hair-raising stories is “Sanib,” starring Jillian Ward, in which a young girl becomes possessed by an unspeakable evil. A priest-in-training must confront his deepest fears and test his faith in a battle between light and darkness. Inspired by true events, Sanib delves into the thin line between faith and fear, exploring what it truly means to face evil in all its forms.
Directed by King Mark Baco and written by Anton Santamaria and Onay Sales-Camero, FSG, the movie also features Martin Del Rosario, Epy Quizon, Ashley Ortega, Therese Malvar, Rolando Inocencio, Vince Maristela, Cheska Fausto, Nikki Co, Eli Padilla, and Lotlot de Leon.
From the TV screens that defined viewers’ Halloween nights to the big screen where actual Filipino stories become cinematic nightmares, KMJS’ Gabi ng Lagim The Movie transforms real-life events and horrors into an unforgettable big-screen experience.
Catch KMJS’ Gabi ng Lagim The Movie in cinemas nationwide beginning Nov. 26.
