Disney+ to work with Hideo Kojima, announces new Japanese, general entertainment shows
HONG KONG - The Walt Disney Company Asia Pacific released its upcoming Disney+ slate of Japanese and general entertainment shows, including a collaboration with game creator Hideo Kojima.
Renewals for shows and the unveiling of new titles were held during the star-studded event Disney+ Originals Preview held on Nov. 13 at the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.
Disney surprised the audience by announcing its collaboration with game creator Hideo Kojima, known for “Death Stranding” and “Metal Gear.”
It will work with Kojima on a Japanese anime series based on the wildly popular post-apocalyptic action-adventure game series titled “Death Stranding Isolations” (working title).
The series will be set in the same world as the video game but will provide a completely new story. It will be directed by Takayuki Sano and produced by E&H Production.
Global content trends
Disney announced that top anime titles on Disney+/Hulu have consistently seen 60 percent of global viewing hours come from outside APAC, with strong interest from audiences in US and Europe.
In the past year, anime audience growth rose in France, Brazil and Mexico, and Japanese live action is emerging as an extremely exciting category.
Korean storytelling, with deep fandoms already in APAC and the US, is seeing significant audience interest in Latin America, with the strongest engagement in Brazil and Mexico.
Additional Japanese titles unveiled included a first look at the second half of “Disney Twisted-Wonderland: The Animation Episode of Heartslabyul,” a new romantic comedy starring Disney+ regular and Korean actor Ji Chang-wook and Japanese actress Mio Imada called “Merry Berry Love” (working title), and hit anime titles “Tokyo Revengers: War of the Three Titans Arc,” “Wandance,” “Cat’s Eye Part 2” and “Medalist Season 2.”
Japanese boy band Travis Japan will star in the new unscripted docuseries called “Travis Japan Summer Vacation!! in the USA” that will debut in summer 2026.
A new comedy reality show from Chidori’s Daigo called “Daigo Project” (working title) was also announced.
JAPAN
Death Stranding Isolations
In “Death Stranding Isolations” (working title), somewhere in North America, as Sam Bridges is walking across the continent in order to save America, the "someones" are trying to deal with their isolation in their own way. An old man is trying to realize salvation through ways outside of the connection advocated by Bridges. A female warrior is trying to kickstart a world of constant fighting. A boy holds a grudge against Bridges, and a girl has embraced her loneliness. On the precipice of the end of humanity and the world, their fates and hopes converge, as another story of Death Stranding begins. And now, comes another explosion. It will be released in 2027.
Merry Berry Love
Ji Chang-wook and Mio Imada will star in “Merry Berry Love,” a Japan-Korea project by CJ ENM, the studio behind globally memorable content like the dramas, “Crash Landing on You,” “The Queen of Tears,” and “Marry My Husband,” as well as the Academy Award-winning films “Parasite” and “Past Lives.” A romantic comedy about a botched Korean designer, Yubin, and a Japanese farmer, Karin who begin an unlikely co-farming journey on a mysterious island in Japan. It will be released on Disney+ in 2026.
Cat’s Eye Part 2
In “Cat’s Eye Part 2,” three sisters - Hitomi, Rui, and Ai - run a café during the day and work as a team of thieves at night called "Cat's Eye" to recover their father's art collection, which was stolen by an underground art broker syndicate. Balancing the two jobs becomes increasingly difficult because Hitomi is dating Toshio Utsumi, a detective in charge of investigating the Cat's Eye cases who does not know his girlfriend is one of the thieves he is pursuing. It will be released on Dec. 26.
Daigo Project
“Daigo Project” (working title) will be the first ever Disney+ Original Japanese variety show. The series is planned and produced by Daigo of the renowned Japanese comedian duo–Chidori. This upcoming project marks Daigo's first time producing global content, sharing an all-new concept from Japan to the world. It will be released in 2026.
Tokyo Revengers: War of the Three Titans Arc
The fierce feud between the Tokyo Manji Gang and Tenjiku ended in a tragic conclusion. As each member carries their grief into the future, Takemichi Hanagaki finds himself in awe of the late Tetta Kisaki. After learning the full truth behind the time leaps, Manjiro Sano (Mikey) makes a fateful decision. Having left the past behind, Takemichi finally reaches the best possible future — one where his girlfriend, Hinata Tachibana, is alive. However, he is nowhere to be found. Medalist Season 2
Failed figure skater Tsukasa Akeuraji meets Inori Yuitsuka, a young girl whose parents are pushing her to give up on her dreams. Impressed by her determination to skate, Tsukasa takes Inori under his wing, and the two begin working together towards their dream of becoming medalists. It will be released in January 2026.
Travis Japan Summer Vacation!! in the USA
Japanese boy band Travis Japan embarks on a 10-day summer vacation in America. Led by Noel Kawashima, a certified travel planner and member of the group, the trip takes them from Arches National Park to Durango, Monument Valley, Sedona, and more as they immerse themselves in the vast landscapes and rich culture of America. What discoveries await them on this unforgettable adventure? It will be released in summer 2026.
The Walt Disney Company Asia Pacific also unveiled its upcoming global general entertainment slate for 2026.
At the Disney+ Originals Preview in Hong Kong, “Shōgun” star and executive producer Hiroyuki Sanada and series cocreators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks discussed season 1 as they prepare to commence production for season 2.
Last year, “Shōgun” broke new ground and made history with a record 18 Emmy wins in a single season.
The event offered an exciting preview of upcoming global general entertainment titles on Disney+, featuring new seasons of fan-favorite series such as “Paradise” season 2, FX’s “The Bear” season 5, and “Percy Jackson and The Olympians” season 2.
There were also sneak peeks of all-new, star-studded original series and documentaries including “Chris Hemsworth: A Road Trip to Remember,” the festive special, “A Very Jonas Christmas Movie” and “Pole to Pole with Will Smith,” a new series that follows Will Smith as he travels across all seven continents in 100 days.
Additional highlights included the news that “Alien: Earth” will be returning for season 2 and a preview of “The Testaments,” a gripping spin-off series that takes place a few years after the events in “The Handmaid's Tale.”
There were also previews of FX’s “The Beauty,” a highly anticipated global drama series from acclaimed producer Ryan Murphy; and “Descendants: Wicked Wonderland,” a fresh installment in the beloved “Descendants” franchise introducing a new character, Chessy the Cheshire Cat, and a first look at season 2 of the Australian Original, “The Artful Dodger,” an irreverent follow-up to Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist” exploring his adult double life in the far-flung penal colony of Port Victory, Australia.
Global General Entertainment Titles
A Very Jonas Christmas Movie
In “A Very Jonas Christmas Movie,” Joe Jonas, Nick Jonas, and Kevin Jonas face a series of escalating obstacles as they struggle to make it from London to New York in time to spend Christmas with their families. “A Very Jonas Christmas Movie” premiered on Disney+ on Nov. 14.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2
Season 2 of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” is based on the second installment of Disney Hyperion’s best-selling book series titled “The Sea of Monsters” by award-winning author Rick Riordan. In the new season, Percy Jackson returns to Camp Half-Blood one year later to find his world turned upside down. His friendship with Annabeth is changing, he learns he has a cyclops for a brother, Grover has gone missing, and the camp is under siege from the forces of Kronos. Percy’s journey to set things right will take him off the map and into the deadly Sea of Monsters, where a secret fate awaits the son of Poseidon. “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” Season 2 will premiere on Dec. 10.
Descendants: Wicked Wonderland
The latest installment in the “Descendants” franchise explores what “happily ever after” really means for Red (Kylie Cantrall) and Chloe (Malia Baker) following their time-traveling adventures in the 2024 hit film “Descendants: The Rise of Red.” Set primarily in present-day Wonderland with a host of new and familiar characters, the sequel delves into the warning at the end of the previous movie: There are consequences when you alter the fabric of time. “Descendants: Wicked Wonderland” will premiere in 2026.
Chris Hemsworth: A Road Trip to Remember
In this intimate and uplifting documentary, Chris Hemsworth turns the spotlight away from himself and toward his father, Craig, who was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Determined to help, Chris designs a therapeutic “road trip back in time,” revisiting key places from their past to explore the powerful science of social connection–a crucial but overlooked tool in protecting brain health. Paradise Season 2
“Paradise” is set in a serene community inhabited by some of the world's most prominent individuals. But this tranquility explodes when a shocking murder occurs, and a high-stakes investigation unfolds. Paradise will return for season 2 in 2026.
The Testaments
"The Testaments" is based on Margaret Atwood’s Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name, which was published in 2019 and takes place in the dystopian theocracy of Gilead. Years after the events of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “The Testaments” is a coming-of-age story that finds a new generation of young women in Gilead grappling with the bleak future that awaits them. For these young women, growing up in Gilead is all they have ever known, having no tangible memories of the outside world prior to their indoctrination into this life. Facing the prospect of being married off and living a life of servitude, they will be forced to search for allies, both new and old, to help in their fight for freedom and the life they deserve. “The Testaments” will premiere in 2026.
The Artful Dodger Season 2
Dodger and Belle’s forbidden romance is under threat and a murderer stalks Port Victory. “The Artful Dodger” will return for season 2 in early 2026.
Only Murders in the Building Season 6
From the minds of Steve Martin, Dan Fogelman and John Hoffman comes a comedic murder-mystery series for the ages. “Only Murders In The Building” follows three strangers (Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez) who share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one.
“Only Murders in the Building” will return for season 6 in 2026.
FX’s The Bear Season 5
A young chef from the fine dining world comes home to Chicago to run his family sandwich shop after a heartbreaking death in his family. FX’s Shōgun Season 2
An original adaptation of James Clavell’s novel, FX’s “Shōgun” is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war.
