CEBU CITY – Through a deeply rooted Filipino culture, the city of Danao is slowly recovering from the devastation of typhoon "Tino."
Danao Mayor Nito Durano III said the people of Danao have displayed remarkable “bayanihan" spirit that led to a steady, organized, and community-supported disaster response that has helped the city get back on its feet.
Fourteen of the city’s 42 barangays were affected by flash flood. Four sustained severe damage due to heavy debris and river overflow.
Despite these conditions, the city government pushed forward with systematic clearing, restoration, relief delivery, health protection efforts, and realignment of infrastructure projects.
In the immediate aftermath of the Nov. 4 flashflood, Durano instructed all local government unit workers to report to work.
“Of course, it is natural that we prioritize our families and homes. But let us not forget that we are workers of the government. We have responsibilities to the people. We should not forget that we are public servants,” Durano said.
The mayor led the reorganization of personnel into field teams tasked with parallel cleanup operations covering the flooded City Hall complex, nearby public facilities, and the hardest-hit barangays.
These teams worked through the week to restore mobility in neighborhoods, clear silt and debris, and assist families returning to their homes.
Volunteers from mountain barangays travelled to the lowlands to join clearing efforts.
National government agencies, private companies in Danao, civic groups, and individual volunteers also contributed manpower and equipment that helped accelerate the reopening of roads and community spaces.
