ILOILO CITY — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Department of Health (DOH) have encouraged health researchers in Western Visayas to use artificial intelligence (AI).
Speaking at the recent 6th Western Visayas Health Research Conference, DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. said AI should be seen as a tool in research that could eventually be useful in solving gaps in health services.
Dr. Aimee Marie Gayomali of the DOH-6 said AI can be used in improving delivery of health services, especially in far-flung areas.
One of the key elements discussed during the conference organized by Western Visayas Health Research and Development Consortium (WVHRDC) in Iloilo City is ethical use of AI.
“Technology can only complement, but it cannot replace human empathy and ethics,” said UP Manila Chancellor Dr. Michael Tee in his keynote address.
Roxanne Aviñante of the DOST Advanced Science and Technology Institute presented promoting research and innovation of AI in the country.
Other speakers include Iris Thiele Isip-Tan, Dr. Mideth Abisado, Dr. DJ Darwin Bandoy, and lawyer Maria Tanya Karina Lat.
Also present were DOST Undersecretary Sancho A. Mabborang, DOST-6 Regional Director Rowen Gelonga, and UP Visayas Vice Chancellor Dr. Alice Joan Ferrer.
